Bert was a very personable horse. He was from the first day I met him, to the last time I saw him.
He had this funny thing, where he would not walk unless you were beside him. He refused to be led, like an animal. He wanted to walk with you, as an equal, as a friend.
Even though Bert liked to walk with people, he happened to be a very slow horse. I mean, there are slow horses, and then there was Bert.
Anyways, if he was a couple paces behind me instead of directly beside me, he would take his head and put it flat against my back. He wouldn't do anything mean or whatever, he just put his head on my back as we walked. The front of his face was extremely flat, which might have helped a bit.
I don't know why, but I always loved it when he did this. It was just this little personal thing, that the two of us shared.
"Horses lend us the wings we lack."
