Chapter Five

He couldn't believe what had just happened. Or he wouldn't believe what had just happened in front of him.

Newt had felt Thomas's arm slip through his fingers as he'd desperately tried to stop him from sprinting into the maze. But Thomas seemed too determined, too stubborn to be stopped by Newt.

He felt like crying. But he didn't. He couldn't. He'd lost three people in one day, three of the people that he was closest to in this place. And now the boys were all looking at him, for something that Newt couldn't do right now.

They wanted condolences.

Gally took some responsibility, herding everyone away from the door so they could get back to work with heavy hearts. Newt found himself silently thanking Gally, however Newt remained there for a while, simply staring at the closed doors. His mind and heart were aching at the revelation. He was all alone now. But he knew he wouldn't be able to do it alone. Not ever.

He felt miserable. And guilty. Thomas had only been here a few days. If anyone had run out into the maze, it should have been Newt. His own mind told him.

The hours dragged on slowly and painfully, everyone was asleep now. Almost everyone. A torch light by the wall said otherwise. Newt stared at all the names, some already crossed out. His attention drawn to a few in particular.

He found himself smiling slightly. Minho's name was right at the top, he'd been been adamant that his should to there, because he was one of the tallest Gladers when he first arrived, although now Newt himself was just slightly taller then him, which perturbed Minho greatly.

Below that was Alby's name. It was the oldest one there. He was here first after all. He was Newt's oldest friend here, he'd done so much for him. After he left his running shoes for good..Alby had been there. Newt didn't really fit into any of the jobs categories exactly, so he was second in charge, probably the perfect job for Newt and Alby knew that. Without Alby, Newt didn't think he would have gotten this far, scratch that he knew he wouldn't of gotten this far.

His eyes fell onto the next name, below Alby's. It was the newest one there. Yet it could have been from the start in Newt's mind. Thomas. There was so little known about him but Newt couldn't help but trust him. After the girl had come up everyone looked at Thomas differently. They thought he was dangerous. But no, Newt refused to think so. There was just something about Thomas, that made Newt feel strange yet normal at the same time. It's as if he'd been there with them from the start. But that wasn't possible.

Newt questioned, perhaps he knew Thomas before the maze? He didn't know, supposed he wouldn't know that ever. He could always remember something about the glade. He knew what a tree was and what kind of tree it was, but every time he tried to chase the memory to find out where he'd learned it from or even how he'd learnt it, the memory disappeared before he could find it. It was the same with the Greenie. It was beginning to frustrate Newt to say the least.

He sighed and ran a hand through his hair. They were gone now. No one survived a night in the maze. The name just below Thomas's own proved that. Ben...he didn't know what had happened to him. Newt, himself was lucky enough to not have been stung. He'd seen the results a few times, with Gally and later on Ben. He'd attacked Thomas (which again drew attention to the new glader) and had pretty much lost his mind. He jagged lines cutting through his name signified the end of his life in their eyes.

And that meant that no one was coming back. They'd lost another three Gladers to the maze in this cruel god forsaken place.

He raised his knife to the wall placing it just before the T and felt his gut clench in pain. A sudden voice stopped him.

"Newt?" It was Chuck. Of course it was. His eyes were filled with confusion as well as hope that made the older boy feel envious. His hope had died out long ago.

"Chuck..sorry I didn't hear you coming.." he said, eyes downcast for a moment before he turned towards the boy and away from the wall. "What are you doing up so late?" he asked, eyebrow raised slightly. Chuck only looked at the wall and then sighed shuffling as his own lantern swung slightly in his grip. He seemed to know what Newt was going to do.

"We're going to wait." he said, eyes suddenly filled with determination which almost knocked Newt off balance for a moment.

"Wait? We?" he asked suddenly feeling guilty for what he was about to do to the wall. Chuck's gaze was all it took for him to reflect on his decision. It wasn't that he didn't have faith in them. It's just that...no one makes it out of the maze alive. Not after spending the night in there. That was just the way it was. Chuck only nodded in response seeming nervous but then offered Newt a smile.

"We both know there's something special about Thomas...if anyone can do it it's him." Chuck said. The words really did hit home. There was something different about Thomas. Something amazing that the glade had been lacking before his arrival. Perhaps if Newt just hoped for one night..."Even though his heads full of klunk for running in there." the comment made Newt laugh.

"Can I join?" he found himself asking. Chuck merely smiled and nodded his head saying something about already having a place set up for him which made Newt smile slightly. As Chuck made his way to the West door Newt looked back at the wall, almost pleadingly yet with hope filled eyes.

"I believe in you all. Come back alive..." he said, before he picked up the lantern and followed Chuck, the light receding from the wall as well. 'Well that was bloody inspirational...'

A/N: Hello everyone! Sorry it's been so long. I've just started college so there's a big work load. I hope that you like this chapter, something extra that I found wasn't really explained in the film. Because they didn't cross out Thomas, Minho and Alby's names right away. Anywho I hope to see you all soon.
