It was heart wrenching.

The rain had stopped pouring, so everyone got back to work, including Thomas. And finally the other runners had returned to the Glade on time.

But Alby and Minho hadn't returned. Thomas watched with a heavy heart as Newt ran to and from each door checking for the pairing with a frantic and nervous expression on his face. Thomas couldn't convey the words to express his feelings. His feelings for Alby and Minho. His feelings for this messed up prison like place. His feelings for Newt.

Thomas was currently working on the gardens with Zart. Though his mind was somewhere else. He didn't care for gardening or for being a slicer. Runner. His mind told him again. He sighed and looked over the glade. That's all he wanted to be.

All he wanted to do was go to Newt and try to comfort him like he did before in the rain. Which now that he thought about it sounded incredibly cheesy. But for him the moment was real. It was one of the realest things he'd experienced since he came up in that box.

He wasn't sure what it was about Newt. He just knew that he loved him. But then again did he even though what love was like? The creators couldn't take that away as well could they? Of course not. He told himself. He knew how he felt. Though he didn't want to act on this. He'd only knew Newt for a few days.

Dinner came and went. Newt refused to eat anything. He stayed and watched the doors, waiting for his two friends to arrive. Everyone felt uneasy. But Thomas felt it especially radiating from the blonde at the West door.

It was unfair on Newt. Thomas knew that Newt was second in charge and would therefore have all the responsibilities that Alby had. Thomas looked back at his food and felt his appetite leave him. He suddenly didn't feel so hungry.

"It's two minutes before the doors close." Gally mumbled as all the boys stood around the doors.

Newt was at the front of the group with Thomas and Chuck on either side of him. It wasn't hard to tell that everyone was nervous. Especially a certain blonde. He stood there shuffling nervously and biting his lip anxiously. Gally's constant time reminders didn't calm anyone's nerves.

Thomas looked into the maze, dark and dim, vines clung to it's walls. "Can't we send anyone out to search for them?" He asked looking around at the boys around him who looked into the maze with hope filled eyes, especially the older ones.

Newt shook his head. "We can't. It's against the rules. They have to make it out on their own." He said firmly. Though his voice did shake slightly. Thomas realised, Newt was terrified of the maze.

Gally sighed and looked at Thomas. "He means that if they don't make it out. They're dead." He said bluntly making Newt stiffen slightly.

Thomas sighed and then looked back into the maze. There was something about it. He wanted to go inside to look around. He couldn't stand the constant curiosity and pull to the maze.

Thomas knew that Alby and Minho's time was up when a loud clank echoed through the Glade. The right wall began moving, making a sickening grinding sound as it shifted closer towards the left. There was a large gust of wind, which made most of the boys look away.

Newt and the other looked defeated. This wasn't good.

"There! There they are!" Chuck's voiced erupted through the dismal atmosphere.

At the end of the long path, carrying an injured and unconscious looking Alby was Minho looking exhausted and sweaty from a day of running. He was half carrying, half dragging their leader.

Then all hell broke loose.

"Run!!"

"Keep going!"

"You have to leave him!"

The boys were screaming, wanting the two to get out in time.

Thomas looked at them. 30 metres away. He thought. The doors, seemed to close quicker then they were before. Like they were speeding up in order to confirm that they would be trapped.

20 metres away. Thomas knew that they wouldn't make it. He could tell. The others couldn't yet, especially the younger ones. They still had hope in their eyes.

Thomas couldn't just stand here. He knew he had to do something. He had to help.

The path into the maze was becoming narrower and narrower by the second. So Thomas decided to do something he'd wanted to do from the moment he came up in the box.

He ran.

The walls were closing in, compressing him into the left wall of the west door. He kept running. He needed to get to the other side so he wasn't squashed into the wall.

Thomas fell down to the other side of the maze as the doors closed, cutting off the yells of the boys on the other side.

He panted and looked up at a defeated looking Minho, who was now on his knees. Alby lay sprawled besides him looking half dead except for the slight rise and fall of his chest.

"Congradulations Greenie..." Minho said tiredly.

"You just killed yourself."
