Thomas x Newt.

The glade was a hardly a hard place to live. Thomas knew this for certain. He'd been there for a few days now and was already getting used to the life he led. He had friends. Like Chuck. Sure the guy may be annoying at times but he kept Thomas company and was overall a great guy. He had enemies, like Gally for instance. He'd hated him since he came up in that blasted box. And then....there was him. He was so mysterious yet so friendly at the same time. He wasn't broken but cracked from the maze. He wasn't just second in command. He was Newt. Thomas couldn't really put his finger on the exact time that these strange feelings began to unearth themselves from within him but he decided he no longer cared.

As Thomas thought this, he lay in his hammock staring up at the sky. Chuck had long since dozed off besides him snoring blissfully in his slumber. However Thomas remained awake and ready for anything. With his nerves and emotions spiking Thomas stood silently deciding that he was unable to sleep at that moment. He crept away from the sleeping boys and to the lookout tower doing so as quietly as he could.

Steadily climbing the ladder, his thoughts again wondering to the dirty blonde haired boy that caused him so much confusion and pain at the same time. Reaching the top he sat with a rattle as the wood beneath him creaked in annoyance. Again he looked to the sky for answers but saw only stars that shone as bright as they could without exploading into nothingness.

"What are you doing up this late Tommy?"

Thomas jumped, almost crying out at the sudden voice besides him. His eyes darted to the new person, his own dark brown eyes connecting with a pair of even darker chocolate ones. His breathe caught before he regained his composure.

"Couldn't sleep..." he muttered out loud enough for the other to hear. Newt seemed to watch and process this answer then accept it with a nod.

"Well me neither...too much to think about..." he said in return. And with that Thomas knew he meant the girls sudden appearance and the note that came with her. He shuffled closed to the boy who had seemingly been here a lot longer then himself.

"Don't stress Newt, that note could mean anything..." He tried feebly to encourage the other. Newt gave a small smile at the encouragement and only nodded his head. Then there was silence.

"So Tommy, what you out here thinking about?" The blonde asked casually.

Thomas as stopped himself from blushing secretly thanking the moon for being so dim. "The girl...and the the maze." He said. It's what a newbie would think about right? He didn't really think of the girl other then ask himself why she looked so familiar. But he still had this desire to be a runner. He wondered if he'd ever get there.

Newt showed no reaction to either statement. "Why you thinkin about the hell beyond the glade, want to go out and play happy family with the grievers or somethin?" He asked sharply surprising Thomas by the venom secretly laced in his words. Was it something he'd said?

Thomas as shook his head violently his eyes on the elder boy. "Of course not! You think I got Klunk for brains?" He asked trying to lighten the mood.

Newt's eyes drifted from the sky to settle upon him, they softened. "Nah, I was jus messing with ya, shank." He said a light smile spreading across his face.

Thomas smiled as another silence came over both boys. It was strange sitting here with him and just watching the stars. After what seemed like forever Thomas finally decided to speak.

"Hey Newt?"

"Yeah Tommy?"

Thomas was hesitant, but decided to ask anyway. "You think we'll ever get out of here?" He asked his eyes now locked on the other boy.

Newt seemed to stiffen and then immediately relaxed once again. "I don't know shank...we've been lookin for a way out for two years now. Woulda already found it if it was obvious." He said. Thomas knew what that really meant. It meant that he didn't know if there was a way out.

Thomas's mind wondered and came back to the conclusion that these creators were messing with them all. That they were playing a cruel and sadistic joke on them all by letting them believe and hope, then crushing their hopes completely. He could see it in most of the older kids eyes. They knew. But kept the dream alive for younger kids like Chuck.

Thomas sat in silence with Newt. Staring up at the stars and sitting side by side. Joke was on the creators, he thought. He knew if he had Newt then he'd be okay.

And it was then underneath the stars at Midnight that he realised.

He loved Newt.
