"Nope, no good." I threw the green top onto the mountain of clothes forming in the center of my room. I looked at the clock. 11:22 a.m. Uh oh. I pulled out a skirt with pink frills and scowled in disgust. Why did I even have this? I sighed and the skirt fell on top of the mountain. I already had the perfect jeans picked out, I just needed a shirt. I continued to riffle through my wardrobe. Ah ha!
I pulled the top out of my closet and smiled. It was perfect! Wait...would wearing a tube top be too provocative? Eh, who cares? It took me forever to find the perfect shirt. I looked at my closet and shuddered. There was no way I was going into that jungle again.
"Jackie!" My mom called. "I'm heading out now, are you going anywhere today?"
"Um, yeah! I'm going to the movies with Haruka!" Okay, so lying to my mother is not the best way to start the day, but I'm not taking any chances. If she somehow finds out/comes to her senses, she might not let me see Alphonso.
I quickly slipped on my jeans and the top and started looking for shoes. What does one wear on their feet for the first date? I eyed the heeled, lace ups my dad bought me the last time he was here and sighed. They were perfect, but looked oh so painful... Well, I guess I could suffer for a little while. I mean, I'll be sitting during the movie so I should be fine, right?
I quickly put on my shoes and went to the mirror to try and tame my hair. Okay...up or down? Up or down? Eh, down I guess. Okay, now I'm ready and I can go....
...why aren't my feet moving?
I took a deep breath and tried to calm myself. I've been on plenty of dates before. Of course, most of them were set up by Sofia and Natale and the guys weren't near as interesting and intimidating and handsome as Alphonso... Right! I can do this. I'm Jackie Doyle goddammit, I can do anything! Except go on Kingda Ka, that ride scares me.
I took a deep breath and hurriedly made my way out of my house, and across the street. I knocked on Emma's door and, thankfully, my friend was the one to answer.
"Jackie?" she asked in surprise.
"Hi! I need a favor." I gave her my most innocent smile.
So, after some begging and pleading, Emma finally borrowed her grandmother's car and drove me to the theatre. We were silent the whole way there. I was too nervous to talk and I think Emma was worried about something, because she was biting her lower lip so hard I'm sure there will be bite marks on her lip later.
Emma pulled up to the theatre and put the car in park. I looked at the car clock and saw that it was only 11:55 a.m.
"So..." I said, turning to look at Emma. "Thanks for driving me. I know it was a bother."
Emma shook her head. "No, it's fine. I'm just...a little confused. If you're going to the movies with Haruka, why didn't she pick you up?"
"Oh well..." Why did Emma have to be so perspective? "You see...Haruka's car is in the shop, so she's having her dad drop her off. I didn't want to be a bother, you know, since her dad scares me a little."
