Chapter Fifteen: Childhood's End

The morning dew didn't help my slippers, or my feet for that matter as it soaked through the thin barrier of cotton with a cold wet sting; sending my toes into a curl for warmth. I almost wanted to call for a time out so I could at least put my boots on, but that would only make me appear weak, and that's something I didn't want to be seen as.

If I'm going to be a knight someday, I'll have to prove that I'm worthy. Not just to my brother and everyone else, but to myself.

"This is going to be harder than we thought.." Seph scratched his head while gazing around like a lost child.

"I don't think he would've gone too far."

"This is a test Daren, for all we know he could be miles away."

"Miles? It's only been ten minutes Seph, there's no way Alex traveled that far in that amount of time."

"Well you saw how fast they were back there.."

That was true, but I was still convinced that they were still in the remote area, I couldn't see them going a long distance away from where we began, but then again..

"There! I saw something!" Seph yelled in excitement as he dashed into a run; leaving me to throw my arms into the air and shaking my head.

"Seph you block head! It's probably just an animal!" I yelled at his backside, though I wasn't in the least surprised, he would always just run off like that, just like a curious kid.

With my feet becoming solid blocks of ice, I waited several minutes for Seph to return empty handed; my light grey eyes glancing behind me to a soft sound of footsteps, but found nothing and returned my gaze back to the direction Seph ran to.

"What are you doing Seph? Come on, let's keep going!"

No answer.

"Seph!? Did you get lost or something?"

Still no answer.

Giving into a sigh, I began walking to the last direction Seph ran off in when I heard another sound behind me, this time the familiar voice of my brother!

My heart jumped before racing at high speeds, and I couldn't help but be both excited and nervous at the same time. W-was it awkward for me to be feeling this way whenever I'm near my brother? It was something I couldn't control, and never could..

"You're going to catch sick if you don't put these on." Alex spoke quietly as he placed my boots, jacket and a fresh pair of socks near me.

"T-Thank you.." Oh Lord why am I so nervous? Alex probably thinks I'm some kind of weirdo with a brother fetish or something..
