Emily
"Shit! I'm going to be late! I said while running to the bus stop.
When I finally made it to the bus stop. The bus ride was long and boring. This gave me time to think and worry about everything.
"Okay, so I got Collin off to school. I got the bills and checks made out for half of the ones due for this month. I get paid from this job next week, so that will cover some of the other bills." I said to myself while trying to not stress out anymore than she was.
The bus came to stop and I was off and running to the local diner.
When I entered the place, she came out of the back with smile on her face. "Ah, Emily so glad to see that you made it to work today. You know you are ten minutes late."
"Sorry, I'm late Mrs. Ranker. The bus took a little longer today."
She looked at me and said "Child, what happened to your car?"
I was not the one to shy away from the lifestyle I lived. I worked for everything I have and what I can provide for my brother. Ever since my parents died and left me in charge of my brother I've come to terms of being labeled poor, or lower middle middle class. But for some reason selling my car to get money and selling my expensive phone to just have a cheap flip phone makes it more real instead of just a misunderstood classification.
"Mrs. Ranker, I had to sell the car. Collin and myself needed the extra money." I tell her with head hung low. I was embarrassed and ashamed.
When I lifted my head I could see those loving eyes of hers. "Oh, sweetheart, I'm so sorry to hear that. If you need me to push your time back I can do that for you."
"I would love that but I can't because I won't have enough time to get to my other job. But thank you again." I tell her as she releases me from her hug.
"Sweetheart, you work too much. You need to live again and go back to school to finish that degree you were working on."
I wanted to cry. I wanted to go and finish school, it was never my intention of quitting, but I had to so I could take over the bills and support my brother. I wanted him to have a better chance at life. I wanted him to go to a good college and succeed in life.
"Maybe when Collin finishes college I'll go back." I tell her with out letting those tears escape. I walk away before I started crying.
Mrs. Ranker let me wait on tables, that way I could get more tips. I was so lucky to have a boss like her. She became a second mother to me. I have been working here since I was a senior in high school and I'm 24 now.
I look up and see that my shift ended and I rush to the back and quickly change into my other uniform. I quickly catch the bus and go to the movie theater.
I clock in and find my spot behind the ticket booth. "Only five hours more then I'll be home."
I'm going my third hour of work when the manager pages me to go to his office.
"Wonder what you did?" Carter tells me as I leave him to handle tickets.
I make my way and all I could think was "oh shit what have I done?"
I knock on the door and I hear a voice "Come in"
I open the door and there he sat, my worst fear. No he wasn't a horrible boss, it's just coming here meant I could possibly get fired.
"You paged for me, Mr. Fintch"
"Yes, I wanted to talk to you about your hours. I'm sorry to tell you but I can't work you the hours you have. Starting next week they will be cut. I have too many employees saying that I'm playing favorites by giving you more hours each week."
