Chapter I

Reese Kolansky was bored out of his mind. It was summer, just two days before father's day. Not that there was anything all that exciting about father's day. His own father left him and his mother years ago for another woman. So there was nothing planned. Not a damned thing.

Reese was getting sick of staring at the same four walls for the past two days. Movie posters covered most of his walls. A box spring supporting a mattress was in the same place where a water bed used to be. Two lava lamps, one green and one purple sat at each corner of his desk to the left of his bed. A mirror attached to his dresser was covered with photos. Most of them were of his favorite bands, the rest were photos of his friends. A smiling Reese, smiling an authentic smile. Usually because Damien Barraza was there supporting him with his arms to keep them from falling. Spontaneity was their common interest.

He'd lay on his back, on his bed, sometimes thinking of his best friend, Damien Barraza. In truth, Reese had more than a simple crush on his best friend. He found himself in love with the guy. He'd went as far as confessing this to his own reflection. Twice. But he never had the guts to say it out loud. Simple because, Damien had his sights on someone else.

Reese had tried to fall out of love with his best friend many times. Sometimes it felt achievable, the rest not. He knew Damien could never return the feelings. Not when he was too caught up with some guy by the name of Eric. Reese had only seen this Eric somewhere between 3 to 4 times. The kid was really good on his feet. He usually had this look on his face, as if willing himself to disappear. There was something interesting about him because of that, but Reese never got around to catching him. Not when Damien was around.

Damien and Reese were inseparable. Usually singing together. Sometimes dancing, working their hardest to win first place at every talent show they entered for school. They always won first place too. Every time.

There was a giggle from the next room over. Reese's little sister, Cameron was in her room. The low and slightly cocky voice came next, meaning Cameron had her best friend over. Aden. Now there was an interesting guy. Eye catching if Reese could admit that fact out loud. He was the only other person that could calm Reese down, like that one night, many nights ago.

Cameron, as it turned out, got smacked around too much by her boyfriend. They were all at some party together. Everyone heard the fight. When Reese found his sister being thrown out a window, luckily it was on the first floor but still, devastating to watch. Reese lost it. Aden was the only one who managed to keep him from nearly killing the guy, who dared to put his hands on his little sister.

When Reese saw the guy at school, he lost it again, and got kicked out of school. Served him right! Reese was hoping that got the guy to think twice about putting his hands on any other woman like that again. Not even Damien could stop him, but Aden did. All it took was the feel of his hands on his arm, sending shock waves, bringing him home. Just like the first time.

The first time that happened, Reese shook it off like it was simply an odd occurrence. Nothing special. The second time, now Reese had started to look at the guy differently. They never made any kind of skin contact since, but Reese wondered about touching him again just to see if third time's a charm.

Aden usually wasn't Reese's type. Aden liked to wear dark colors most of the time. Sometimes he dressed a little flashy, or as Cameron called it stylishly. They'd been about as inseparable as Reese was with Damien. At first Reese couldn't stand the guy's cocky attitude. Then he soon found out that Aden was gay and Reese had no problem with that. Not when he had his ongoing miserably-in-love-with-his-best-friend dilemma going on. Reese thought about going to Aden for advice, just like Cameron always did.
