Chapter VI
In less than five minutes, they were in front of Eric's house. If the house looked miserable before, now it looked depressing. Rubio was quiet the whole ride, his mood suddenly at its lowest. He was sure Kyra was looking at him a few times questionably but kept her comments to herself. Good.
But if this was love felt like, then it sucked. Rubio couldn't help but be hyper aware that Ollie was so close yet so far. He was right behind him, different vehicle. Rubio was trying like hell not come across as anything but indifferent about the situation. He needed to focus on something more important. Right now that had go be Eric.
If only he could outshine Ollie's so called bo-no, he wasn't even going to finish the thought. He already felt sick. He couldn't read the expression on Ollie's face when they saw each other through the windshield. For a fraction of a second, he might have seen surprise. He looked away too soon anyway. He could feel those fresh wounds reopening. He wasn't the kind of guy who wore his heart on his sleeve, but right there, in that very moment, he might as well have.
Heartbreak sucks!
Since they were in front of Eric's house, he felt Kyra nudge his ribs gently. When he turned, there was a mixture of pity and concern in her features. She was hot! But why couldn't he feel anything? Why couldn't he get himself to move on with a hot girl who came with an equally hot car? What was wrong with him?
"I think you should stay out of sight."
"Oh." He ducked immediately, but due to his long limbs that made it difficult.
Kyra was shaking her head softly but didn't comment on the subject he most dreaded. She was sharp alright, he had to give her that. Maybe too much for her own good. He never gave any directions to Eric's house and yet, here they were. How, he still didn't know. Maybe he'd ask someday.
Rubio wanted to ask, but Kyra was already out hearing distance. The chick moved like a vampire?! Well, she didn't exactly blur as she moved, she was just... quick. Rubio was too much of an emotional mess to be normal enough. All he could do was sit with his head down by his knees and wonder what Ollie would be doing at this very moment.
He should have been asking himself, have Eric and this Kyra ever met before? What was she up to? How were they going to accomplish anything? Eric was smart, he wouldn't willingly go along with a complete stranger.
Dang! Maybe he should have at least sent Eric a text message for a heads up! Why didn't he think about it? Because he was too busy being hopelessly in love.
He heard the knock, he heard the exchange of pleasantries, the chirpy voice of Kyra and was tempted to peek. He was sure Eric would come out of whatever corner he was hiding, feet dragging, to see what was going on. The deep rumble of another voice, at first sounded unwilling, but the more Kyra seemed to chirp, the rumble changed to something else. Then everything went silent.
Now Rubio was curious but he have much of a choice. He had to keep out of sight or the whole operation would be blown. He didn't hear another car door open but he could hear a car running behind him. Rubio had to make himself stop right there. Again.
Instead, Rubio chose to block everything out and make himself think about something else. Like girls! There was still a list of numbers he could call to help him forget. Maybe after whatever plan this was, well he could go home, and at least call someone. Anyone! Even that high maintenance girl! If there was anyone who could keep him busy, it would be her! Whatever her name was...
Rubio tried not to smile like he was psychotic, a knock on the window stopped him thinking about that. Rubio was happy to find Eric's face at the window instead of his uncle. Rubio could only imagine how uncomfortable things would get come next family reunion. He would not be looking forward to that.
