Jaida
"Ladies and gentleman, we are now arriving to JFK so please remain seated until we land." I couldn't believe that I actually moved to New York but it was going to happen. I had to get out of California. It sucks that I had to leave all of my friends but I was also glad to get away from Keenon. Something still inside of me still loved him and I wanted to believe that we were going to work things out but he wasn't healthy for me. Twirling around the heart shaped necklace, I quickly snatched it off. I wanted nothing to do with him anymore. It was time to move on and find somebody who wanted to be with me and only me. Usher's "U Got It Bad" blasted through my headphones as everyone started to retrieve their luggage. I removed the headphones and as soon as I stood up, I bumped my head and quickly fell back in my seat. "Are you okay?" I heard a smooth masculine voice speak out. Opening my eyes, I was speechless. This man was beautiful. From his smooth caramel skin to large but soft hands, I wanted to speak but the words wouldn't form against my lips. "Here, let me help you up." He extended his hand helping me and also helping with my luggage. "I'm Dante Raymond and your name?" I quickly smiled and replied back. "My name is Jaida. Jaida Hanley." We shook each other's hand and we both exited the plane. "Well, it was very nice to meet you Dante." I waved goodbye before he stopped me from exiting the airport. "You like coffee Miss Hanley?" I stopped and smiled showing my interest in his offer. We walked down the busy street to Starbucks to talk and get to know each other. Once it was our turn, he ordered his chai latte and I ordered my vanilla bean frappuccino. We sat in a quiet corner and talked for what felt like an eternity. "So what brings you to the Big Apple?" Dante curiously asked. "Took a job offer. What about you sir?" "Sir? What am I, your father?" He chuckled and eventually so did I. "I'm sorry. I just have good manners, that's all." Dante nodded and answered in the most sincere way. "I just finished law school and I accepted a position at one of New York's prestigious law firms." Impressed with him already, I looked down at my watch as I was late for my meeting with Jordan, my boss. "Well I'm sorry to cut this short but I have to go and settle in my new place and meet my boss. It was so nice to meet you Dante. Congratulations on your success." Making my way down the busy sidewalk, Dante caught up with me. "Look, I usually don't do this but I can't let you get away. May I have your number?" I quickly blushed at his honesty. "Yeah. You sure can." He took out his phone and handed it to me. I entered my number in his phone and handed it back to him. "Make sure you call me Mr. Raymond." I looked up at his big brown eyes. "In due time, Miss Hanley." Soon after we parted ways. I don't know what it was with Dante. Maybe it was his mannerisms, his honesty or maybe how he approached me with kindness and respect. Something I wasn't used to, especially when I was with Keenon. Two hours passed by and I settled in my new place. The first thing I wanted to do was call everyone to tell them how well everything went, which I did once I was relaxed. The last person I called was my mommy who I missed so much. We discussed everything under the sun. "Mommy I feel like a changed person. This move was everything I needed." "Jaida Marie, you haven't changed. Just your address." She laughed. I hated when she did that. As soon as I wanted to be happy, she wanted to bring me down. I cut our conversation short as I laid in the bed. I twirled my hair with my finger consistently trying to figure out how my life was one big dramatic experience. I got off the bed to look into the mirror. My mother was right. I was still same old Jaida, which I didn't want to be anymore. I soon after was interrupted from my thoughts as my phone rung. Answering the unknown number, I spoke softly. "Is this Miss Hanley?" "This is she, who is this?" I wondered. "Hi it's Dante, from earlier. Umm I was wondering if you were busy?" I cut my light on and stopped figuring out what I wanted to change about myself and gave him my undivided attention. "I actually was on my way to sleep." "I was wondering if you would love to join me for dinner sometime. What do you say?" Smiling through the phone, I accepted his offer and we made our plans for Friday night at 8 at an unknown place. "I'll pick you up. Send me the address." I think he could sense that I gave him a look over the phone. Hearing him laugh made me skeptical. "I'm not a stalker, Jaida." I laughed and I told him my address. "You have a good night Miss Hanley." "You have a good night also Mr. Raymond." After that phone call, I was starting to think that this move to New York was one of the best decisions I've ever did. There weren't any regrets, I was starting to fall in love with this city already.
