Eli’s POV
I listen intently on everything Vi found out. After she had expressed what she had learned to me, I remembered what had happened just moments before, with my roommate.
There was no motive that came to mind as to why Justin didn’t tell me. Perhaps he forgot. Or it just slipped his mind, perchance. Either way, I was absolutely positive he had a perfectly reasonable explanation for the situation at hand.
I had reached my dorm in no time at all and didn’t think through what I was going to say. The door creaked open to expose Justin snoring softly from the bed. I roll my eyes at his current state, and at the continuous snores and little drool pools on the pillow. There was no way someone that looked like he did right now could have screwed me over on purpose.
I wished I had a camera, so that I could capture his appearance and hopefully use the embarrassing picture to get him to be honest with me. But I probably had nothing to worry about.
Grabbing one of the pillows from my own bed, I smack him a couple times, not really holding back my strength. He awakes with a start and instantly wipes the drool on his face.
His eyes are half seeing and he looks like he just woke up from a coma.
“Hey man, what’s up?” He slurs. I pull up a chair and run my finger through my hair, debating on how to start the conversation. I decided than that ripping off the bandage would be the best way.
“Why didn’t you tell me my girlfriend was here and needed me to go to her dorm the other day?” I blurt out, keeping the poker face to the max.
Justin blinks the sleep away and I see a trace of recognition flash across his face before he assumes a dumb look.
“I dunno what you’re talking about.” He says, not meeting my eyes. I laugh at him, rolling my eyes.
“Dude, just fess up.” I say, placing the chair back and leaning against the wall. His eyes are cold and calculating, and he doesn’t reply, daring me to do something. I gladly take his challenge.
I push myself away from the wall and grab him by the collar, pulling him to his feet. I proceed to drive him into the wall next to the bed. His back makes a hard thud as it makes contact, forcing him to let out a mild grunt.
“You really don’t want to do this, Eli. Big mistake.” He taunts. “And as for your girlfriend, I may have vaguely remembered her coming over. But it doesn’t concern you, seeing as the visit was for me.” He raises his eyebrows and gives me a boastful smile.
“You want to talk about big mistakes?” I snarl. “You just made one.” I land a hard punch on his gut, causing him to double over. I kick him, sending him sprawling onto the floor. He tries to flip over and lie on his backside, but I knock him in his ribs before he can.
His face was starting to turn red. I kneel over and punch him in the nose, hearing a hard crack.
“That was from Vivienne.” I say calmly, almost happily, and walk out the door, leaving him with a bloody broken nose and hopefully, a deflated ego.
These thoughts had flashed in my mind again and again. Obviously, I related them to Vivienne. At first I was a little worried she would think badly of me for beating him up. But there she was, happy as a clam, especially after I told her I broke his nose.
“And you told him it was from me?” She laughs, and I smile, nodding in response. She was so easy to talk to, and it gave me so much joy when I made her happy, especially in this dismal place.
“Oh, I wish I was there to see the look on his face!” She exclaims, and gives me a rewarding kiss afterwards. “My hero.” She says, grasping her hands together and holding them against her heart, batting her eyes at me.
I try kiss her again, but break away because we were both laughing. Suddenly, she stops and the happy look leaves her eyes.
“Eli, I’ve been thinking about starting a rally.” She bites her lip.
The joy was suddenly sucked out of the room right before my eyes.
Vivienne POV
The smile leaves his face instantly, and I want to slap myself for ruining the mood. Unfortunately, things had to be discussed sooner or later. And I was starting to fear that later may no longer be an option.
“What exactly do you mean?” He asks solemnly.
“I mean, organize every person attending this school and take her down. It would be her against forty of us.” I state my battle plan, slamming my knuckles into each other, cracking them.
“I think you’re forgetting the Fishermen.” I feel my face fall, only to have it rise once more.
“But if every single person keeps fighting, at one point don’t you think she’ll stop beating us up? She’ll have to dispose of us;” I add air quotes when I say the word “dispose”. “And if we find out where she takes us to ‘dispose’ of us then we can make a break for it.” I finish with a flourish.
“So you just want to get one of us to sacrifice ourselves to Madame?” Eli asks in horror.
“Obviously, I don’t want that. But what choice do we have? We need someone on the inside, someone who can feed us the right information. And we’ll find this person, just not now. Our main concern is getting everybody together.”
Eli shakes his head. “I want to agree with you, Vi…” He trails off. I clasp his hands in mine, meeting his eyes.
“Just trust me. We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.” I smile at him warmly and after a moment’s hesitation, it is returned with a kiss on my forehead. I sigh in relief.
“So…how exactly are you planning on starting this rally?” Eli questions as his hands leave mine and start to trace circles on my arm.
“It’s simple. Spread the word, first of all. I mean, there are only forty people here so it shouldn’t take long. Next, I was thinking we could all sneak into the dance room at around midnight and that’s where we can have our first official meeting.” Eli nods in understanding.
“I’ll tell the guys in my class. When do you want to plan the first meeting?” He probes.
“Tomorrow night,” My lips are cracked. “After the fornication class.”
