Chapter 1 – The Unlikely Hero

I want to be a hero, a straggly haired teenager thought to himself as he walked through a densely populated thicket. Behind him was a group of teenagers who were also traversing the thicket. They seemed to be hiking through the forest following the lead of the straggly black-haired boy.

I want to be like Goku, the straggly haired boy thought to himself. A hero has people who depend on him to save the day. Despite who you are, shouldn’t everyone have the chance to become a hero? These were the thoughts of Emery Acer as he led the group of teenagers through the forest.

“How’s everyone doing?!” Emery called back at the group. He kept moving forward without stopping.

“I don’t think I’m gonna make it!” Derek Rome, a younger boy, said with a huff as he pulled himself over a rock. He had short blond hair that was parted neatly. He was wearing a collared polo shirt and jeans.

“I agree with Derek, but-” Jan, a brown-skinned girl with glasses huffed as she struggled to keep up with the group. She would've rather have Emery made the group read manga* quietly, but since Emery became the group’s leader he had changed. She suddenly remembered that Emery still had the manga she had traded him a few weeks ago.

“Derek, every step makes you stronger!” said Ken Ueno, a black-haired boy with a long ponytail, as he agilely strode farther ahead. He had the demeanor of a swordsman of the orient. Someone like him wouldn’t follow a person like Emery, but in Emery’s case he had made an exception.

“Ken! Sometimes you’re all that keeps me from beating the crap out Mr. Cap-i-tan,” Rina Ino, a black-haired girl, said as her arms were folded. She had stopped to take a break, but not for long. Someone like her would never follow a person like Emery either, but in Ken’s case she had made an exception. Also, some of her friends happened to be a part of their group.

“That’s THE captain to you! And I already feel stronger!” Kiran East, a tan and tall boy with blond hair said enthusiastically. He had his fist in the air as he spoke. Kiran was the epitome of a jock, but following Emery Acer was something more of an interest to him than an obligation. Kiran has his cool moments, always relies on his own strength, but in this case he really wanted to fight Emery again, seeing as their last fight ended in a draw.

“Derek, if these guys are getting stronger then so are we!” Grey Ames, a small brown-skinned boy, said as he helped Derek make it over another large rock. Grey was Derek’s best friend, and they both  joined the group because there were girls.

“I don’t know what you guys are complaining about!” Annie Light said. She had brown hair which was held in place with a girl’s hair band and she was kind of short. She was the closest in the lead and closest to Emery, even farther ahead than Kiran.

“Right Kamie?” Annie said to another of the girls.

“Totally!” Kamila Page said. She was on the tall side with hair that was styled in short pigtails. She was wearing a dress with jeans underneath. She was just as happy-go-lucky as Annie.

“We’re almost there!” Emery said, as he continued leading the group through the forest.

Derek hesitated to take the last step to the top of the plateau. Grey grabbed his hand and helped him up. Once at the top, Derek brushed off his pants and then looked around. The plateau was in fact a large clearing in the middle of the forest. The sun shone in the clearing and the sky was blue except for the occasional cirrus cloud. The middle of the clearing had a slight depression and was spotted with short grass, traces of soot, and dirt.
