"Bet they're thinking smallpox." Stiles says aloud.
I bit down on my thumb nail while perched on top of my desk. After the CDC had come, Sydney was taken away by them and we were quarantined to stay in the classroom with Simon. Scott had gone with Sydney, claiming he was worried about her, but the four of us know he was trying to find out more information.
Allison had disappeared not too long ago to see if she could find anything out for me. Being able to communicate with the dead was very useful.
"Not likely." Simon speaks up from where he is sitting at the desk. He's leaning back in the chair with a magazine held in his hands. He hasn't looked the slightest bit worried about this whole ordeal went down. He just propped his feet on the desk and opened up the magazine he had with him.
The four of us turn towards him. None of us had been expecting him to be listening or for anyone to be listening. Everyone else was dispersed around the classroom in small groups, all immersed in their own conversations.
Simon lowers his magazine just a tad to see the four of us. "Smallpox was eradicated worldwide in 1979. We've only managed to completely eradicate two viruses in history. The other was rinderpest. It killed cows."
"So, we should be comforted by that, right?" Stiles asks.
Simon remains calm as he says, "Unless it's something worse."
I frown at the man, confused as to why he seems so calm about this. Ms. Martin seemed freaked out by all of this. How is he so calm? The Center for Disease Control is a big deal and he's acting like nothing is life threatening here. Stiles is trying to remain positive, but I know it's something much worse.
"Whatever it is, they're taking it pretty seriously." Malia whispers to us.
The windows to outside are suddenly covered by a white tarp. People crowd the windows, whispering about the people dressed in yellow suits outside. Now, we can't even see outside.
"There's a lot of cars and trucks out there." Malia listens carefully with her supernatural hearing.
Stiles subconsciously rubs his body, like he has an itch. I carefully watching him. Please, please don't tell me that Stiles is getting this virus, too. I can't handle that.
Malia's head cocks to the side. Her eyes flicker to Stiles. "Your dad's with them."
Stiles jumps down from the desk he was sitting on across from me. "I should probably call him." He walks over to the bins filled with manila envelopes that Ms. Martin had us put our phones in. Stiles flicks through the files for the one he put his phone in.
"Don't bother." Simon says.
I slowly walk over to Stiles by the bins. I slide the folder that holds Scott's phone inside. Lydia needs to know what is going on.
Simon peers up at us with his magazine still in hand. "They would shut off any access to all outside communication by now." Simon shrugs one shoulder. "No cell service, no wifi. No one starting a panic." He seems so calm about all of this. "Looks like we're all just going to have to wait here and see what happens."
My brows furrow at the man behind the desk while I grab Scott's phone. There's something up about this guy. Stiles shoves his phone in his pocket and walks back to Kira and Malia. I keep my gaze on Simon, suddenly very suspicious of him.
"You're way too calm about all of this." I daringly tell him.
Simon looks back up from his magazine. "I guess you could say that this isn't the first time for me." He licks his finger to turn the page in his magazine. "Although," His head tilts as he reads the magazine. "This is a much bigger scale than last time."
