"She's the most amazing girl in the entire world." He said.
Rolling my eyes at Jackson I replied, "I understand the feeling. I really do, but that's not going to help me solve your problem. I need a name Jackson."
"Her name is Jenna Marks."
"Jenna?!" I sputtered. "As in Kyle's little sister. The human Jenna?!" Jackson nodded solemnly.
"Now you see my problem."
"Yeah. She doesn't know?"
"How could I tell her something like that? She's not stupid. Humans don't have mates, and last I checked she wasn't part wolf. She would think I'm crazy. I don't want her to shut me out before I even get a chance." As sorry as I was for Jackson, it was nice to know that someone understood. Kat and Jess could feel bad for me all they wanted, but neither actually understood what I was going through.
"On the bright side Jenna isn't going to be searching for her mate. She won't be waiting patiently until her 19th birthday. If you asked her on a date she would say yes, so make that your goal. You should start by becoming her friend. Hang around Kyle more so that you and Jenna have more contact. Maybe ask her to dance at Graduation."
"Why would Jenna be at Graduation?" Jackson asked.
"I invited her. I don't really have any family, except for Lukah, but he's already going to be there, so Jess and I thought it would be cool to have Jenna come."
"So you and Jenna are friends?" Jackson was getting more and more excited as I spoke.
"Well yeah. We are both going to be bridesmaids at Jessica's wedding, so we spend a lot of time together. In fact, a bunch of us were going to have a picnic tomorrow. I happen to know that Jenna will be there. You should tag along"
"Wouldn't it be weird for me to just show up?"
"No. You're friends with Kyle right?" He nodded. "And Jessica is the queen of inviting random people to things. Trust me. No one will even question it."
"What time?"
"We are planning on meeting at noon. Near Rex"
"Is that the dinosaur?" There was after all, only one dinosaur.
"Yes. Don't be early. Seriously you don't want to be the first one there. And bring a bag of chips or cookies or something."
Jacksons grin seemed too big for his face. "Ok. Yeah. Chips, dinosaur, got it. I'll be there." He rose to his feet and went to leave. When he reached the door he turned back and said "Thanks Lily. This means a lot to me. I promise to do everything that I can to help you with Andre. You deserve to be happy. Maybe if all goes well we can go on a double date" I smiled at him sadly.
"Thanks Jackson. Good luck with Jenna" He nodded and closed the door, leaving me alone to my thoughts. My headache had died down now that the wolf had stopped yelling at me. She seemed to be giving me the silent treatment, but it was better than arguing with her. At least I could get some sleep now that she was quiet.
It wasn't hard to get comfortable, even on the lumpy couch. And when I finally dozed I dreamed of bright blue eyes, and wedding bells.
I awoke to the sound of my front door opening. Sitting up groggily I looked to see Lukah walking in the door. He was drenched in sweat and carrying a shovel. I gave him a questioning look.
"I was shadowing at the farms" he replied by way of explanation. "They had me digging up weeds."
"Good. You deserve more manual labor. Maybe I should write a letter to the council telling them that you should be placed at the farms permanently."
"I understand that you're pissed at me, but that would just be plain cruel."
"So are you going to explain to me why you punched your best friend in the nose?" He sighed as if I had asked him to clean the entire house with a toothpick.
"Will you stop being angry if I do?" he asked.
"Probably not. But I might not spit in your dinned tonight."
"Fair enough." He said, and came to sit on the couch next to me. "I had a free hour in-between shadows, so Andre and I went to get food. We were just hanging out when he brought up his mate. I don't think you understand how difficult it was for me to not just blurt it out. Seriously Lil. I almost did. It seemed like he could tell that I was hiding something, and kept pestering me to tell him. I said I didn't want to talk about that, but he wouldn't drop it. Eventually I got so fed up that I just Wham! And clocked him in the nose." I was oddly touched that he had done that for me.
"You're still a complete idiot." I said "But at least you are an idiot a good brother."
"So you aren't mad?" He asked surprised.
"Oh no. I'm still furious that Andre got injured, but I do understand why you did it. And to be honest, I probably would have done the same thing." He chuckled.
"Let's face it Lily. You would have done waaaay worse." He joked.
"Do you want me to kill you?"
"Exhibit A." Lukah laughed. "Now onto more important things."
"Such as?"
"What should I make for dinner?"
