Anela

I fluttered back to my room after finishing all the rooms. My head was spinning with what had just happened. The Edmund James wanted to talk to me, me a maid. He wanted to talk to a nobody. I just smiled at these warm feelings inside and started counting the days until Sunday even harder. I anticipated rec time even more as the days drew closer and on Sunday I took a little more time in preparing myself, especially with my hair.

Each stroke from my brush was very slow and deliberate as I smiled dreamily into the rust-speckled mirror. The maids in my room were all probably wondering what was going on with me. Hillary came up to me and said "Are you alright Anela?"

I remained facing the mirror, brushing my hair and answered her reflection in a dreamy voice, "Never been better." I see in the mirror Hillary look back at the rest of the maids with a clueless look on her face and they urge her on. "How so?" she says.

Still in my dreamy state I answer, "He wants to talk to me. He wants to talk to a nobody." And with that I leave the room. As I leave I can hear Marie whispering "She's in love!" I don't care much about what they say as I head to the hallway to meet Edmund James. I look at the clock in the hallway 11:10 and Edmund James still had not turn up. But just then I hear something from upstairs, Jessica. "But you can't go now; I was going to take you to Vogue so you could see me in action." Someone responds but it is so quiet that I could only hear the word business.

Jessica and Edmund James start walking down the stairs and I can see them. Jessica has thrown her arms around Edmund James. He stops walking down the stairs, turns around to face her and says in a quiet voice, "I promise that tomorrow I'll go down to Vogue and watch you model." There was a short silence and Jessica hugged Edmund James. "Ok, hurry back from your business." She says equally as quiet as he had been.

If the close tenderness was not enough, being referred as "business" had burst my bubble of any happiness I had. All I am is business in the eyes of Edmund James and that is all I'll ever be. Jessica finally leaves Edmund James and he continues down the stairs, I look away so it doesn't look like I've been eavesdropping. "Hello, how are you?" Edmund James asks me as he enters the hallway.

"Fine," I say rather bluntly. I look away to keep the tears from coming to my eyes.
