I walked up to Grove City FBI headquarters latte in hand. I paused at the door to take a deep breath. I cringed and pinched the bridge of my nose to keep the memories out of my brain. Breathe in, breathe out. I hear myself whisper. I draw in another breath and push through the sleek glass door.I walk through the metal detectors. Give "Good mornings" to security guards I've come to know over the past three years.
"Morning Miss Owens, the chief is waiting for you in her office." Martha tells me in her cheery British accent. "Love the outfit by the way, that jacket reminds me of an old friend from England. The top is great too, that oddly enough reminds me a bit of my husband's ex. Although it probably wouldn't if not for the jacket. Is it strange for me to have been friends with my husband's ex. Not that she's on Earth now. That sounded creepy. I promise I'm not a murderer. I'm rambling aren't I. Well anyway, you look lovely." Martha is the M.D. for this location of the FBI. I certainly couldn't handle her job. All the blood. So much blood. I stop myself. Block out the memories, Punzie. Get it together.
"Thank you," I respond in a flat voice. Of course I knew Chief Gothel needed to meet with me. She was giving me a new partner assignment since I would no longer be working with Samantha. I hear the click of Martha's heels as she walks away. I take a final sip of my coffee before tossing the paper cup in the trash can. I check my watch. Two minutes until I'm late for the meeting with Gothel. I have just two minutes to make it the entire length of the building.
I rushed off through hall A. I couldn't be late. Beatrice Gothel was the chief for a reason. She was about as tough as a steel wall. Most agents called her a witch behind her back, and I would have to agree. She had started as a high class agent in the 60s. She had even worked on the Kennedy case. It was often a popular topic of break room debate most thought she was the leader of a government conspiracy revolving around the assassination. Now she was well in her 80s although she didn't look a day over 40. She has over 30 plastic surgeries on record. I knew enough about her to avoid getting on her bad side. I checked my watch thirty seconds left. I dashed to the end of hall D and darted through the door in her office.
"Hello Ms. Owen, this is your new field partner Callie Wilson."
Oh no, not her. Anyone but her. It was Callie. Callie, the girl who is obsessed with lizards. Callie, the girl who dyed her hair green for an artistic statement. This had to be a joke, right.
