Chapter One | The Utopia
After a few weeks of cloudy weather, and cold rain-- everyone in the Utopia took advantage of the nice weather. The blocks park was full of kids, even for a Monday afternoon. Usually it just had younger kids who didn't have to suffer through seven painful hours of sitting in a classroom and learning about things like old literature like Romeo and Juliet. But today, it was full of kids that were all the way up to their sixth year in the block school. Backpacks rimmed the park, and there were a few small groups just sitting out in the sun-- enjoying it.
The block park sat in the middle of the block, there was a tall building on each corner-- those buildings were for housing. Then between them there were an assortment of different businesses. A few clothing stores, the biggest building that was only two floors was the blocks grocery store, them there was a building made of glass completely that was the Tech store. Each block had a similar set up, maybe different stores-- but they were all usually the same. At least that was the set up of the housing blocks. The business blocks, or the strip as people called it was full of bigger businesses with either nicer things, or sometimes cheaper things. On the open side of the city was the government buildings facing the blocks. There was the hospital attached to the main building, there was the library where people could go find different codes or old books, and then there was the city park.
Other than that, there was the second city in the Utopia. It had been just as full and busy as the first city, but then a few years after the Utopia was built they decided they wanted out of the Utopia. Why, that was a question everyone always asked. There was nothing left outside the Utopia. It had been built because of the pandemic, and droughts that had been happening all around the world. But even though the first city never expanded much into the second city, it was like a giant play ground for older kids like Wade.
Since he had finished school the past June, he had more time to mess with the small engine on his hoverboard. He couldn't do much with it, he wasn't really all that great at the mechanics of boards-- but he was pretty good at actually using it. So during the day, he'd let it sit out on the porch of their apartment, and then a couple nights a week he would go with a group of friends into the second city.
"Wade,"
He sighed heavily and leaned against the wall with his tablet across his lap, "What do you want, Vin?"
"Can I borrow-"
"No." Wade retorted quickly before his younger brother could even finish his question. Every time that his brother borrowed anything, he either never got it back or it wasn't the same. Usually he'd just never get it back, and then he'd find it himself once he was missing enough and finally just looked through his brothers room.
"You don't even know what it is." he grumbled as he pushed the door open and then looked inside, "I just need ten bucks."
Wade rolled his eyes, "Ask mom."
"She said no,"
Wade frowned and then shrugged, "Well that's too bad, isn't it?" he replied, smirking a bit as he tossed his tablet onto the bed and pushed himself off of it to get his things together for his trip over to the second city.
"Please, Wade. I really need it."
"What for?" he asked.
"I have to pay for a library fee..." he said quietly.
Wade chuckled, "So let me guess, mom said earn it yourself, it's your fee."
"That's the short version."
