The smell of fresh linen met Lexi's nose. She stretched and opened her eyes, taking in the bright morning light. Her eyes widened as she took in the unfamiliar surroundings and she slowly began to remember what had happened last night. Tears threatened to fall, but she kept them back as she heard a knock on the door. She slowly slid out of the massive bed and walked to the door.
She opened the door and met the face of the stranger who had saved her last night. The same handsome stranger who had given her a gracious tip and kissed her hand a few weeks ago. She suddenly became extremely aware of her ruined dress she still had on.
He gave her a dazzling smile and said, "Oh, good. You're awake. How are you feeling?"
"My head hurts, but I think I'm okay," she said, looking to the floor, becoming shy.
"Here," he said, handing her a glass of water and two small pills. "They're Advil, to help with your head. And I also have some clothes for you," he added and she noticed a small brown paper bag in the crook of his arm. "I had one of the housekeepers shop for you, as I had absolutely no idea what to get nor what size you would be."
Lexi could feel blush creep up on her face. "Thank you so much. That's very kind of you."
"It's the least I could do after what happened last night. Would you like to join me for breakfast in half an hour? You're welcome to change and use the shower if you'd like."
"That would be wonderful. Thank you," she smiled graciously.
"See you soon, then," he said, smiling as he walked down the long hallway.
Lexi quickly showered, enjoying the feel of the hot water against her skin. She tried to towel dry her hair and finger comb it as best as she could. The clothes in the bag fit surprisingly well, a dark blue sweater and a pair of bootcut jeans. She slowly made her way down the long hallway, following the smell of cooking food. Walking into the massive, modern white kitchen, she saw the stranger's back to her as he sat in a chair at the breakfast bar and a pretty Italian woman cooking at the stove. Her face broke into a warm smile as Lexi stood in the doorway, feeling awkward. The stranger turned to look at her and his face brightened.
"Feel better?" he asked, patting the seat next to him, inviting her to sit.
"Yes, thank you so much," she said, sitting.
"I do hope you like pancakes, miss," the pretty woman said, as she scooped out two pancakes onto a plate and handed Lexi the plate.
"Oh yes, thank you," Lexi replied, carefully taking the plate.
The woman scooped two more pancakes and handed the plate to the stranger. "Thank you, Rosalie," he said, taking the plate.
"I'll be in the laundry room if you need anything, sir," Rosalie said, and turned, leaving Lexi and the stranger to sit at the bar.
The pancakes were amazing. Lexi quietly sat and ate as she felt the man's eyes on her the whole time. Placing her fork down, he took their dirty dishes and placed them in the sink and came back to sit beside Lexi.
"So, do you always rescue damsels in distress?" she asked, trying to lighten the mood.
"Not always, just the pretty ones," he said, winking.
Lexi could feel her face getting hot and red. "Thank you. For saving me last night. If it wasn't for you, I honestly don't know what would have happened." Tears threatened to surface again and Lexi had to swallow them back.
"I was just doing what was right. I was walking home from dinner with some friends and heard the door slam open in the alley. When I looked down the alley, it was clear that that scum wasn't getting the message. I couldn't just stand by and do nothing," he said, fully turning to look at Lexi. "There's only one thing I ask in return," he added.
"What's that?" she asked, trying to keep her voice calm as a flurry of thoughts ran through her head of what he could possibly want from her.
"What's your name? Your actual name, not your stage name," he asked.
Lexi was almost shocked at this request. He had literally saved her life and all he asked in return was her name. "Lexi. My full name is Alexandria, but I prefer to be called Lexi."
"A beautiful name, for a beautiful girl," he said, smiling.
Realizing after all this time, she still didn't know his; she asked shyly, "Do I get to know the name of my rescuer?"
"Tristan."
"Well Tristan, thank you," she said, a small smile forming on her face.
After talking with Tristan a little longer and convincing him she didn't need to see a doctor, Lexi decided it was time for her to leave. Tristan had already been so gracious and she didn't want to overstay her welcome.
"Can I at least walk you to your door? So that I know you're safe inside?" he asked, as he put the car in park at the curb beside Lexi's apartment building.
"Yeah," she said, feeling relieved that she wouldn't have to walk by herself. She didn't quite feel comfortable walking through the crowded sidewalk to her building.
They quietly ascended the stairs and walked to Lexi's door. "Thank you, again, Tristan, for everything," she said, turning to go inside.
"I hope to see you again soon, Lexi," he said, and grabbed her hand before she walked inside. He placed a soft kiss on it, just like he had the first night they met, and she smiled as he turned, walking down the hallway.
