I woke to Derrick snoring in my ear, making me slap his forehead. He jumped awake, and glared at me.
"Hat was that for?" He asked.
"For practically screaming in my ear when I have a big enough head-ache as it is." I snapped.
Someone decided to pound on the door as hard as they're body would allow them making me grumble profanities as I threw a pillow over my head.
Did the world decide it had to make as much noise as possible today?
"Hey, I brought Eli Aspirin and water." I heard Timothy yell.
"Thanks man, she drank a lot last night so this hang-over is probably going to be hell." Derrick yelled back.
"Hey!" I yelled at both of them, making them turn to me. "I can hear both of you yelling even with a pillow over my head! Can you be so curious and please SHUT UP?!" I yelled.
They chuckled and Timothy left. Derrick came back to the bed and handed me the medicine and glass of water. I thanked him softly and took the drug and fell back to sleep.
**********I felt someone shake my shoulders.
"Eli, wake up." It was Timothy.
I was a little better, but still had a killer head-ache. I was confused and blinded by the bright afternoon sun shining in.
"What is it?" I asked.
"It's Josh..." Was all he said to distract me from my hang-over.
***************
I shoved open the door and had to stop short at what I saw laying in that hospital bed.
I felt fat tears fall down my cheeks as I saw the bandages wrapped around his whole upper body with the exception of his head and forearms.
Rushing to his side I stood beside his bed. Brushing some hair out of his face, making him stir awake.
At the sight of me, he gave a small smile, which I returned.
"Hey there." He muttered in a hoarse voice.
"Hey yourself." I sniffled.
Josh let out a sigh. "Please don't cry, Eli." He asked.
"I- I can't- how could-" I dropped my head in shame knowing this was all my fault. "I'm so sorry, Josh."
He took my hand in his and we briefly heard his mom make up an excuse to leave us alone.
Pulling me so I sat on the edge of the bed, he brushed his thumb under my eyes, taking my tears. "Dot cry. I'm going to be fine."
I let out a bitter laugh. "Don't lie to me." I still hadn't looked at him since I dropped my gaze.
He smiled. "I'm going to get better and I am going to kill who did this to me." He swore.
I let out a small laugh. "Do you promise?" I asked, knowing the true answer.
"Yes." He lied to me.
I felt fresh tears well, so I had to close my eyes and hold them in.
I tightened my grip on his hand as I heard the heart monitor get slower.
"Eli, you're happy with Derrick?" Josh asked randomly.
I nodded, looking at him curiously.
He smiled. "Then I can go in peace knowing you're happy."
His mom and Derrick walked in. His mom took my spot and Derrick stood at Josh's other side while me and Timothy stood at the foot of Josh's bed.
He said his goodbyes to his family and Timothy before sending me a soft smile.
