Chapter 36: Will you still love me, tomorrow?

Tom had been anticipating that he would hear from Samina more often, now that they were a couple, but he was disappointed. Aside from the one obligatory phone call the day after she returned to the island, which he'd requested, silence reigned at her end. He didn't get it! Was it a case of out of sight, out of mind? Was her work so absorbing that she forgot all about him during the week? It was the complete opposite for him! He missed her terribly and was dying to talk to her every single night, into the wee hours, even. (Umm, not that he would have kept her up, of course. Would he?) He picked up the phone many times over, all set to text Phil to tell Samina to call him, but no. If she wanted to speak to him, she'd call! Wouldn't she?

Perhaps one reason he was particularly itching to talk to her was that he'd been having doubts, serious doubts, about his offer to 'tell all' about his previous relationships! 'Relationships' was definitely glorifying what had for the most part been brief liaisons and one-night stands.

Just what had prompted him to go hog-wild and volunteer such information? There was no denying that in part, it had been a noble impulse. He'd wanted to open up to her, tell her all about himself, even considered it important that he do so. But it had also been a practical one. Samina seemed to get ticked off every time she heard about a woman he'd been involved with, okay, fucked! If they could just deal with the whole lot of them at once, there'd be no more surprises, no reason for her to get pissed off anymore about one in the future. Right?

Right! But was it really wise to dump such information on a woman who considered sex to be some kind of sacred act only to be performed between two people who were married, a woman who'd never had sex before for that very reason? Given such, well, honestly put, archaic views about sex, what was Samina likely to think of his actions? Of him? That was one thing he just didn't get about her, how her mind could be so expansive on other fronts and yet so traditional, so conservative, so fettered when it came to something as basic as sex!

And if she got worked up about one or two women, how was she gonna react when she heard about ...? Okay, he had no idea what the exact number was ... yet. He did know that it wasn't astronomical, (from his viewpoint, anyway), but he also knew that it wasn't ... low. Over the course of the week, his tummy rumbled, and his appetite waned over the prospect of what Samina might do. Ditch him? As little as he liked to go back on his word, he was all set to withdraw his offer!

When Thursday rolled around, and he still hadn't heard from her, he felt a little put out. Her usual pattern was to meet him on a Friday or Saturday night. Why hadn't she called and let him know her plans? He decided to text Phil after dinner.

Hey Phil,

Can u get Samina to call me?

Thx!

Tom

His phone rang immediately.

"Hi."

"Hi," came Samina's unexpected reply. Wow, that was fast!

"Where are you?"

"In my tent."

"With Phil?" Oh, for goodness sake, don't tell me he had Phil to worry about, too! No wonder he hadn't heard from her! Between the two of them, they'd probably been keeping her busy, too busy to think about him!
