Chapter 13
Cade Felix Thompson
Chase & His Parents

I head back home after I saw Chad's face. It's not the right time for me to appear in his life again. Probably, I'll just add more to his stressful life. So when I reach home, I just take a seat on the couch and stare at a distance, with nothing on my mind, with nothing to feel, with nothing to hold. Right now, I need to deal with myself.

If I want to be back in Chad's life, I need to fix myself first before I help him fix his. It would be a tragedy if I show up in his life unprepared and still messed up. I don't know how much time I spend on staring, but what I do know is I'm empty.

A laugh breaks its way into my ears and my heart lightens as I hear the laugh of a child. Then just like a medicine, my heart can feel any emotion again. A child runs into me and takes a seat besode me, hugging me with his little arms. I chuckle.

"Hello, Papa," Chase says as he gives me a grin. Chase is the son of Ezerette and Josh. Even though he's adopted, I feel like he really is my grandson. Ezerette and Josh made a good choice of adopting him. "Dad and Daddy are here also. They told me we can hang out together!" I must have been too busy staring that I didn't notice their car pulling over, or even approaching. I nod at Chase and he smiles.

Minutes later, Ezerette comes in with Josh by his side. They are talking with a happy expression on their faces and my heart clenches at the sight again and my lips turn into a thin line. Apparently, Chase notices it because he stares at me with confused expression, but I mask it with a smile so he will not be bothered again. Such a bright kid, he is.

"Good morning or aftenoon or evening, Dad," Josh says as he places bags of foods on the floor. I roll my eyes at him. He laughs. Josh is so whipped with Ezerette. He gets scared easily if Ezerette hangs out with one of his male friends. Insecure and jealous much. "So... we will be spending the night here with you so you and Chase can hang out. And Ezerette is making dinner because if I'd be the one in charge, expect me to burn the kitchen."

"Oh shut up, Josh." Ezerette mutters as he rolls his eyes at his husband. Josh sticks his tongue at him and Ezerette huffs. "Admit it, you're a loser when it comes to cooking. You don't even know what wok looks like! You're basically an idiot when the topic is related to kitchen utensils or cooking itself."

"Hey, I cooked for you the other day!" Josh tries to defend himself. They are so cute together that it makes me sad again.

Ezerette makes a face at his husband. "Yes. The hotdogs that have been almost burned because of your careless ness. Such a great fryer you are, Josh. But I still ate it because I didn't want you to get sad or something because at least you tried your best. But now, I'm regretting it. I need you to enroll to a cooking school or... or... we'll hire a chef in our house and teach you how to cook. Properly!"

"You... you just hurt me," Josh says, pouting as he stares at his husband. Ezerette scowls but then steps forward to give his husband a hug. I look away at them because I know it would remind me of me and Chad hugging each other. But even though I didn't look, it still reminds me of me and Chad hugging. We were hugging at the hill, at the school bathroom, somewhere, anywhere, as long as we were together. When I look at Chase, he's looking at his Dads do some PDA in front of us and a smile graces his lips. He's happy that he has such a lovable parents. "Okay, okay. Let's get to work. Dad, please do entertain Chase."

"You do know I'm not a clown right," I say to him as I tilt my head. "If I were a clown, I'd be the clown in Stephen King's 'It' and I'd eat Chase alive." That makes Chase squeal and he jumps out of the couch and runs. Josh and I share a look and for the first time since ages ago, he smiles at me proudly and that's what it takes me to play with my grandson Chase.

We run around the house, me trying to chase Chase and him trying not to get caught by me. It makes me feel lighter knowing that I can still make someone happy, but not enough to make my life wonderful, because I'm still living in Hell, and the only way for me to get out of Hell is to beg for Chad;s forgiveness. It will be tough, I know it, but I'm not going to stop until he forgives me. I just hope that if he ever forgives me, we could stay as friends. I don't want to be the somebody that he used to know back then. I do not want to be forgotten by him.

Chase runs back to me. Now do I just realize that I stopped chasing him.

"Papa, is there something wrong?" Chase asks in a cute worried voice. I give him a smile and shake my head. Chase is an intelligent kid, he probably knows that I'm lying. "Papa, just always smile. Even though everything is not fine, just smile. That's what Dad tells me."

"I will, kiddo." I reply in a soft voice. The last thing I want to do is to cry in front of my grandson. No, that's not going to happen. So I take a deep breath and stand up, and then roar and Chase begins to laugh and run. I run after him. "Run faster, Chase. Papa Cade is about to eat you alive!"

"Nooooooooo!" Chase squeals as he tries to hide under my bed. I lean down and grab his legs and drag him underneath the bed and throws him onto my shoulder. He thrashes around me and I laugh, pretending to eat his belly as I tickle his neck. He has a weak spot on his neck. "Papa, stop! Papa! Dad and Daddy! Help me, Papa Cade is eating me!"

Chase grows tired so he just stays on my shoulder, poking my cheek with his index finger. I tweak his nose, like I always did to Chad when we were in High School, and chuckle. We head downstairs and find out that both Ezerette and Josh are cooking. When they see me approaching, Chase on my shoulder, they give me a grin and the holy scent of cream and mushroom being cooked makes my stomach grumble. Chase and I just keep tweaking each other nose and try not to bother Ezerette and Josh, since they are too busy cooking our meal for dinner.

We wait for a couple of minutes before Ezerette announces that the meal is prepared and ready. Josh takes four plates in the cupboard and places them on the table. Ezerette then grabs a bowl and put some cream and mushroom dish in the bowl and places it on the table. Chase and I's mouth water at the sight. Josh takes a seat across from me, beside him is his husband Ezerette, and then I place Chase onto the chair on the side. Josh claps his hands and Ezerette pushes the rice in front of Chase so he can get some. Chase gets a little amount of rice and puts a handful of cream and mushroom on top of the rice and he digs in. I chuckle because it reminds me of Josh.

"You know, Chase reminds me of you Josh, such a messy eater," I say to him and Ezerette laughs. Josh glares at him. Chase doesn't care, he just eats.

"Ohmigod, yes he is." Ezerette agrees with me, nodding. "Even though he's just eating M&Ms, Good God, expect the floor full of M&M pieces."

"Ah, guys, I'm here," Josh says as he waves his hand, making a face.

"That's the twist, Josh, you get to hear how such a messy eater you are," Ezerette says as he scoops a handful of rice and put it on his place and then grabs the service spoon and scoops a cream and mushroom and place it on top of the rice, just like Chase did few minutes ago.

"I'll get back to you later," Josh growls. And I know what 'later' means so I just leave it, smile, and grab some rice and cream and mushroom. "You know, we're still going to the funeral right?"

That makes me look up at them. "What funeral?" I ask them.

"Gloss's mom, sorry you probably don't know them, but his mom just died of heart attack." Josh says as he shoves rice into his mouth, chewing and downing it and then he speaks again. "Genny Cecil Sky, wife of Richard Neil Sky."

"Oh," I say, looking away. "Back when we were in High School, I used to bully Chad." I tell them without stopping myself. Josh and Ezerette look at me with confused expression. I shrug. "Both him and I were schoolmates. I used to bully him, and then we became friends, but somehow we stopped being friends. Because... I... I... I left." I almost say the last part audibly, but both Josh and Ezerette hear it. "Can I go with you guys to the funeral?"

They both nod.

And my heart beats in anticipation.
