dread
/dred/
Anticipate with great apprehension or fear.
"Hey. Hey Em," Jaime said.
"What Hime?" I groaned and covered my face with my arm.
"There was a box on the doorstep for you," he dropped it on the bed.
"Ugh. Was there anybody with that box?" I asked groggily, sitting up.
He shook his head with a shrug and walked out.
I saw the box and immediately dread filled my gut.
Alex's neat handwriting was printed on the lid, reading,'Emma.'
I lifted the lid and saw a note.
"Emma, I know it's a little late, but we needed to get this off of... Nobody. We've been planning this for ages and we wanted to give it to you for Christmas but you know, we haven't seen you. So I just hope you have an amazing Christmas and you enjoy your new year (if I don't see you.)
Thank you for being an amazing friend,
Alex, Zack, Rian, Kara, Jasey and even Jack."
The dread grew as I picked up the book.
It was a scrap book.
I opened the first page where messages from Jasey and Kara were.
"EM! Darling, have an extraordinary Chrimbo! We need to get together at some point. Enjoy your holidays!
Love, Jasey xoxo"
I smiled at the message and went on to Kara's.
"Emmaaaaaaaaaaah! I love you, you little poopie head! Have a fantabulous Christmas and an even better New Year if I don't get to see you! We need to hang more but yeah, you're always with Jack c': (I bet y'all'll get prom king and queen c; ) I love you, my little Emma!
Love from Kara <3"
I turned the page to see a bunch of photos of everybody including Kara and Jasey.
I wiped away a few tears before turning the page again.
"Hey Emma,
I don't really talk to many people, but you're one of the only people I feel comfortable around. You along with Alex, Jack, Rian and Kara. (Sorry Jace!)
I really hope you enjoy Christmas with your family and I hope you get what you want from Santa :D
I'll see you in the New Year, maybe even before it.
Love youuuuuu, Zackykins."
I giggled and how Zack spelled his name. I always called him Zackykins and he called me Emmikins, which didn't really work but hey, so what.
I turned the page to see pictures of Zack and I skateboarding and the likes. There were more pictures of the group of us and then there were old cinema ticket stubs and concert tickets from blink-182 and more.
I closed the book; I couldn't take it anymore. The dread became too much... I didn't want to see his message. I wiped away my tears and put the book back in the box and pushed it under my bed.
The dread had been building up over the past few days however.
I'd been speaking to Jaime and his friends, Mike, Vic and Tony, who had come to stay for a week before we all headed to San Diego. They said that it was a scorcher... It was a blistering heat and I was nervous.
