“Tori mom says you’re gonna be late for work.” Maddie said standing over my bed. I yawned and rubbed my eyes trying to wake up.
“Thanks kiddo.” She flashed me her adorable smile and skipped down stairs as i stretched causing my joints to pop.
I dragged myself out of bed and into the shower. I washed every crevice and splashed hot water into my face before shutting it off and getting dressed into my all black uniform. I tied my hair back into a pony tail not wanting to deal with it, and head downstairs where Maddie and Ethan were munching on a pop tarts. Mom and dad were in the kitchen sipping coffee and reading their preferred sections of the newspaper.
“Hey sweetie how are you feeling today?” my mom asked sipping at her coffee.
“I’m great, thanks for asking” I mentioned happily as I took a bite of pop-tart that Maddie made for me.
“How is the apartment coming along, dear?” Dad finally asked looked up from the paper at me.
“They should be done moving everything in so I might be out of your hair tonight!” I said nearly burning my tongue on the flaming hot inner contents of my breakfast.
” Well if you feel that things aren’t ready tonight you are more than welcome to stay again tonight!” Mom said in her ‘I wish you didn’t have to grow up’ tone. “If your lucky maybe you can get of early and have diner with us!”
“I will ask” I said to please her. It’s not like Connie was ever going to let me leave in the middle of my shift. Connie’s my boss, and she’ll get pissed if any of us request getting off work early. Every one of her employees hates her. She verbally abuses us, gives us shitty hours, and asks for half the tips we get even thought she doesn’t do crap for the customer. In short she’s a bitch and I would do anything to get away from her but with the economy today I have to take whatever job I can get.
I washed down the pop-tarts with a glass a milk, grabbed my purse and pulled on my shoes before saying goodbye to my family. Climbing into my Jeep Wrangler I couldn’t help but chuckle at the song that came on when I turned my car on. Thrift Shop by Macklemore filled my ears as it blasted through my speakers while I drove to my beloved job.
At work my best friend Addy was rubbing her temples. “Hey what’s up?”
“Connie’s on a rampage. Kevin called saying he wants to take over the shop.” I looked at her in disbelief. Kevin is Connie’s brother, he’s stunningly handsome and sweet, unlike Connie. In fact sometimes we doubt they are blood related.
“You’re kidding?” Addy shook her head as a grin broke out on my face happy to hear she might be leaving.
“So what are you doing this weekend?!” Addy asked and I shrugged only to see Connie start to make her rounds.
“We can talk about that later!”
“Okay well Connie’s extra bitchy so watch out.” I nodded pulling on my apron before heading to the cash register.
The place was extra busy today. I was brewing a coffee with skim milk, when Addy asked. “So how did it go yesterday?”
“We got the rooms painted so they are moving everything in today.” I muttered and handed the customer her drink so Connie wouldn’t hear as she made her rounds.
“What colors did you pick?” Asked Danny, another Connie hating co-worker of mine.
“You will have to come over and see for yourself!” I said happily and they rolled their eyes at my excitement.
“Alright, how about Friday we all hang at your new place? Sound like a plan?” He asked as he wiped the counters down.
“Hell yes!” Addy answered for everyone quickly.
“Can’t.” I answered handing another customer their drink.
“Why not? You just said we should come over sometime! Do you have some hunk coming over that you don’t want us to know about?” Okay now I was peeved.
“Say one more guy related thing and I’ll pour hot coffee down your pants.” I took a deep breath to calm myself down. My friends were always trying to push me into new relationships and it was really frustrating; especially since I just got out of a relationship. It’s like they thought I was going to be single forever. “It’s Maddie’s birthday on Friday. We’re going to throw her a party.”
“Oh how old is she gonna be?” Addy asked, making a capichino for a customer.
“She is going to be 14”
“Cool. Mind if I come early to drop off her present?”
“Yeah me too?”
“Maddie would love that. Thanks guys.”
Connie then came to break our little group up. “I don’t pay you to just sit and chit chat, now get back to work!” I damn near jumped out of my skin when she started yelling and Addy groaned making Connie glare at her. I made sure not to do or say anything to piss her off as I quietly went back to work.
We continued taking and making orders. One blonde girl complained I made her coffee to frothy with the whipped cream and it would ruin her figure. Fuming I made her a new one, but switched the ‘light’ whip cream for regular. “Thank you come again.” I said sarcastically.
“So what’s going on this weekend that you sounded so excited earlier?” I asked Addy while I made a smoothie.
“Cody Simpson is in town for a small concert and I have tickets for Friday night!” I went bug-eyed hearing her statement.
“You’re shitting me?” She shook her head. “Ugh damn Maddie for taking six minutes too long to come out of the womb.” My voice was barely above a whisper. Don’t get me wrong I love my sister, but now it would have been nice if she had been born on July 23rd at 11:59 pm instead of July 24 at 12:05 am.
Finally the clock read 6:00 pm. See what I mean about Connie giving us shitty hours, seriously what kind of person makes a girl work from 6:00 am-6:00 pm at Starbucks?
I clocked out and made my way to the door. “Night guys.” I called out to Danny and Addy, when I bumped into a guy at the door. “Oh I am so sorry.”
“It’s okay.” Said a foreign voice. It was then I looked up at the man who I had bumped into, he was taller than me, and thought my mind was playing tricks on me.
He had blonde, messy bed hair, and blue eyes. And if I heard right, he made Addy hyperventilate but there was no way it could be him.
He smirked at me and walked up to a freaking out Addy. I pinched myself to make sure. “Ouch.” It definitely hurt and a thought then came into my mind.
“Oh my god, I just bumped into Cody Simpson.”
