It was Nelson,Michael's elder brother,on the line,"Mike,get to the Trinity Boulevard General Hospital as soon as possible,"there was an urgency in his voice, "Gran was suddenly spitting blood so they had to admit her". Michael went numb upon hearing this,"Mike, you there?",Nelson asked when Michael didn't respond. " I am on my way."Michael said. "Please be quick,Gran is not listening to anyone.She keeps asking for you."Nelson said and disconnected the call.
Michael reversed his car from the parking lot,in to the road and started driving like a mad man, towards the hospital. "Whoa!Calm down,you are gonna kill us both." Vinnie pleaded Michael to slow down his speed but he paid no heed to her request,he was not himself. In no time they were at the hospital.Michael was running as if he was in a race,he had to get to Gran fast. He took the stairs,not even waiting for the elevator.Vinnie followed behind him but at a slower,more sober pace. ............... "My baby is here!" Gran exclaimed happily upon seeing Michael enter the room,her voice was weak. She was very pale due to the blood loss,tubes were dangling from her body and it deeply pained Michael to see her suffer like this.
The doctors had stabilized her for the time being, warning that they might not be able to do that again,if her liver is not transplanted on a priority basis. The infection was transferring to her other internal organs.
"Is this the girl?"Gran asked expectantly when she saw the ring on Vinnie's left hand. Michael eyed Vinnie ,she held his gaze for some time then nodded her head slightly. She was not sure,if it was out of pity for the suffering old woman lying on the hospital bed or because she really wanted to go to Switzerland,that she gave him the go ahead signal. "Guys,this is Vanessa,my fiancé." Michael said, introducing her to his family,with a triumphant look on his face. "Please,call me Vinnie." She added with a smile.
The hospital room turned chaotic when suddenly everyone started congratulating the couple,all at once,even the doctor and nurses joined in . Mr. and Mrs. Blake each gave Vinnie a bear hug and Gran patted her on the back. "You hit the jackpot man,no wonder you have that look on your face." Nelson teased Michael. "Will she come home after marrying Mickey?", Michael's five year old niece,Emily, asked her mother. " Of course she will."Jane replied to her daughter's innocent question then added, "Oh!you look adorable together." ............... "Whew!That went well." Michael said beaming,"I don't know how to thank you." They were parked outside Vinnie's house. "You don't have to thank me.I had my own intentions." Vinnie stated. "What intentions?" Michael asked confused. "You will take me to Switzerland, that is why I am marrying you." Vinnie said,"You would,right?" "Of course,I will." Michael replied smiling.
