Knock knock!!

Aunt Stephanie opened the door and the two cutest twins came squealing behind her, "Mom! Dad!" Their wide eyes turned to sudden curiosity as the officer looked down at them with sad eyes.

"Stephanie Johnson?" The rain poured off the officer's hat thudding against it like a drum, the thunder behind him shaking the sky and the the clouds turning the world into various shades of grey, leaving the world in a temporary cover of depression.

"Yes, may I help you?" Aunt Stephanie asked tugging her gown tighter around her.

"Mam, there's been an accident."

Aunt Stephanie covered her mouth in shock and let the officer in. The officer took of his hat and sat in the chair. When he got settled in the twins stood in front of him, the boy put his chin on the free armrest and asked, "Have you seen my Daddy?" The officer froze.

"Or my Mom?" Asked the girl who twisted in her pajama dress rocking side to side. The officer looked at these kids who looked nothing but eleven years old and said "Yes."

The boy smiled, "Will they be back soon?"

"April! Nate go upstairs!" Aunt Stephanie said, the twins ran up the stairs before tiptoeing down just enough that they could hear without being seen.

"So, you mentioned an accident. What happened to my brother and his wife?" Aunt Stephanie asked on the verge of tears.

"The car slid." The officer said.

"Well, we have to go to the hospital! I've got to see my brother!" Aunt Stephanie grabbed her keys.

"Mam." The officer rose from the chair getting closer to Aunt Stephanie.

"I have to see my sister-in-law! Kids come on!"

"Mam."

"They have to see their parents!" Aunt Stephanie cried. The twins ran down the stairs.

"MAM!" The officer placed his hands on her shoulder.

"WHAT!" Aunt Stephanie screamed tears flowing from her eyes.

"They didn't make it. They're dead."

"You're lying!" Nate yelled, everyone turned to see the twelve year old twin boy with his hands balled in tight fist and his sister clinging to his arm in tears.

"I'm sorry," the officer said to Aunt Stephanie who slid on the floor her face buried in her knees, "The car slid into the lake, the car filled with water and-"

"Stop!"

The officer stopped.

"Get out." The officer hesitated before leaving. As soon as he left the twins ran to their aunt and they all sat together, tears running down their cheeks, "When are they coming home?" April asked, before Aunt Stephanie could answer Nate did.

"They're not, and all because of you. You and your stupid birthday present."

***5 years later***

"Is this your boy?"

I peeked from around the corner watching my brother get brought in, escorted in handcuffs by two police officers. He was always getting in trouble, always in fights, detention, and even juvi one time. "Yes, officer." Aunt Stephanie said before letting out an exasperated sigh.
