Gabriel's POV
Thomas is gone and it's my fault. If I'd not returned home, if I'd have stayed and died like a man on the battlefield, none of this would have happened. I was a coward and it cost my little brother his life. How could I have been so stupid? Now my entire family is involved, My aunt Charlotte, my brothers and sisters, my father even Emiline. Who I don't even know. She's a good person, I could see myself being close friends with her, or even more than close friends. Wait a minute Gabriel, don't think like that you barely know her. She's very attractive. Emily could however be mistaken as my sister though as we look very much a like. Although she's obviously much more attractive. She's has very long, somewhat curly hair that's tied up in a braid and big chocolate brown eyes but I still barely know her. You cannot base a relationship on looks.
"So Emily, do you have any family?" Father asks her.
"No." Father nods in a knowing way and leaves the subject.
"What happened to them?" Nathan asks.
"Uh, they were murdered." Nobody presses the subject after that.
*After eating at Aunt Charlotte's house*
"Well I mustn't impose. I'll be on my way." Emily says with a bright smile rising from her chair.
"It's late. Stay. Sleep. You can be on your way tomorrow" Father says.
"I couldn't! I wouldn't want to impose!" She insists.
"Nonsense. You aren't imposing, it's simply my way of paying you back for helping me get my son back," Father pats my back. "I insist!" Her smile fades a bit and she agrees. Father and Aunt Charlotte leave with my brothers and sisters.
"I never did get the chance to properly thank you, Emily."
"It wasn't really all my doing. Your father had the idea I just followed along. I was not even supposed to be there."
"But had my father not, would you have come for me?"
"I don't know. Probably. I can't bare to see anymore families ripped apart by the hands of this war. So most likely. I was planning on helping when you were to be hung but your brother intervened." Emily says sadly down at her booted feet. I look down as well. Thomas may have been my younger brother, but he was also my best friend.
"I'm very sorry for your lose by the way." She says quietly. I swallow.
"You were watching?"
"Yes. I was going to do something about your brother being shot as well, but anything I could have done would've gotten the rest of your family murdered." She says with remorse in her voice. I smile a tad.
"Well thank you." I say to her, looking up to meet her brown eyes.
"Gabriel, please show Emily to her room." My Aunt Charlotte comes into the room and says with her soft voice.
'Yes of course." I rise from my chair slightly embarrassed though I'm not quite sure why. Emily follows me to a room, next to wear I'd be staying the night. In the morning I was going back to join up with Gates and the Continental Army.
