Emily's POV
I still hear artillery fire way to close for comfort. I'm also hearing the screams of my enemies. My enemies and my countrymen.
We eventually end up at a camp where again men are staring at me. I hear screams of people with limbs being amputated. It's horrible, blood everywhere. Benjamin, Gabriel and I hop off of the horses and I stay with Gabriel as I hear Benjamin asking for a commanding officer. Gabriel looks around and then he bends down. He runs his fingers over a torn and dirtied American Flag. Then he picks it up.
"It's a lost cause," a wounded soldier with a bloodied bandage around his head says with hatred in his eyes. Gabriel stuffs it in his saddle bag and walks away. I follow after him. We enter a little white tent where we find Benjamin and the apparent Commanding Officer. He shows us a map with little figurines on it and tells us what the other Rebels are doing. It doesn't look good. Cornwallis broke us. There's nothing to stop him from finishing off Washington in New York, besides the French. Who aren't here yet.
"Why should we trust the French?" Benjamin voices my concern and then a French officer enters the tent and I toon them all out looking over the map.
"Wait a moment, what's she doing here? She can't be here."
"She helped me take down a fleet. She stays."
I look around. I toon back in at that.
"How many men does Cornwallis have under his command?"
"Eight thousand infantry. Six hundred Calvary. I'm giving you a field commission as a Corneal."
"Might I request, sir, that you transfer my son here under my command."
"Sir, No, I-"
"It's done."
"Thank you."
We all walk out together. Benjamin secures his cap on his head.
"Corneal, I've been a soldier now for two years. As a scalp, horsemen, marksmen, scavenger," Gabriel begins.
"Is that so?" Benjamin retorts.
"Yes sir, I can be of better service with the regulars."
"Where'd you learn all that riding, shooting, scavenging?" Benjamin asks.
"My father taught me."
"Did he teach you any humility?" They get on there horses in sync and then Benjamin offers me a hand to help me on the back of his horse. I take it and swing my leg over.
"He tried. But it didn't take."
"He also taught you every deer path and swamp trail between here and Charles Town which is why he asked you to transfer. We'll put the word out. Start on the South side of the Santee-"
"We'll cover more ground if we split up." Gabriel says. He's not wrong. Benjamin gives him a look.
"Very well, Corporal. You take Harrisville, Panbrooke, Wakefield . I'll start on the North side. Oh and you take Emily." Gabriel offers a wrist and I pull myself over into the back of his horse.
"I'll start on the North side of the Santee. We'll meet at Old Spanish Mission in Black Swamp."
"Yes, sir." We both say and Gabriel starts riding until we hear, "Corporal, be careful."
"Yes sir." Gabriel says and I nod. I know he's not addressing me but its more of a farewell nod than telling him I'm listening. Gabriel and I then ride off together, me on the back of his horse.
