Chapter 1
Shocked. Scared. Nervous. A million things were running through 16 year old Clarissa Morgenstern’s head. She read the note once more, even though she understood it. She pulled Jace closer to her, as he put his arm around her and pulled her in at the same time. She knew immediately who had written this note, and sent the angel wings. Sebastian. Clary’s evil brother who had died, was brought back by the demon Lilith, had possessed Jace, taken him and Clary with him and had tried to make them drink from the Infernal Cup to join his army. It had been a terrifying few months in which Clary desperately tried to save Jace. In the end she did but in the most gruesome, sick, horrifying way; stabbing him through the heart. Jace now possessed the Heavenly Fire inside him. She was hoping for things to level-down for awhile, but then Clary saw this and her hopes fell.
“Where in the world could he have gotten angel wings?” said Isabelle, breaking the silence.
“I don’t know.” said Maryse. “But in the mean time, I don’t want any of you leaving the Institute.” looking at all of them but more at Jace.
“Yea right, like us not to get involved.” said Jace.
“I mean it.” said Maryse. “We don’t know where he is or what he is planning. Better to lay low and not attract danger for a while.”
“We’ll we can’t just sit here and wait for him unprepared. Beside’s we do have some information. We just have to work some things out and figure out what he’s up too.” said Clary.
“Possibly.” said Maryse. “But for now let’s just leave it be, to the Clave.
“No, Clary is right we can’t just sit back and wait. The longer we stay here the stronger he gets. And if-” said Alec.
“Enough!” said Maryse, in a strong tone. “We will not get involved… yet.” she added. “And in case you get any ideas,” she said looking yet again more at Jace. “I will have someone patrolling the hallways along with all the guards we have now. Now go, I have a lot of work do.”
“Well this sucks!” said Isabelle, in a pouty voice as they walked out the library. “There was a big shoe sale going on and I wanted to go to!”
“That’s not even the worse part,” said Jace looking horror-struck. “I heard it was a 25% of sale!”
Clary and Alec laughed.
“Shut-up!” said Isabelle.
“We’ll I’m going to bed. Good night everybody.” said Alec.
“Night” they all murmured.
“So Clary-” said Jace.
“Ugh I’m leaving before this gets all mushy. Good night lovebirds!” she said as she strolled out the hallway looking like a supermodel.
“Anyways, since we can’t go anywhere tonight how about a picnic up in the greenhouse, like old times.” He said with a smile. Clary giggled.
She remembered when they went up there for the first time and had their little “date.” How he had kissed her and gave her, her fist witchlight rune stone as a present. It was one of her happiest memories and she smiled just thinking about it.
“Now? Won’t it be- dark?” asked Clary like she did that night he came to her room.
He smiled also remembering. “Come on I’ll show you.” he said, quoting himself from that night. She laced her hand through his and they walked together up to the garden.
As Clary stepped up the staircase and opened the door, she breathed in the fresh smell of earth and plants. The flowers and fruits growing almost added their own light to the room. They walked over and took a seat in front of the mid-night flower. It bloomed only at mid-night and was so beautiful. With its sparkling petals and sort of warm light. It wasn’t midnight yet so it wouldn’t bloom for another couple minutes.
She reached into the picnic basket and pulled out containers full of all her favorite foods from Taki’s. She looked up at Jace and smiled he smiled back.
They ate in silence for awhile; the Clary felt the question creeping up inside her and just had to ask. “Jace?” she said.
“Yes, Clary.” he responded.
“Well I was wondering, what you think it means; the note and all?” she said.
“Well the way I see it is we’re dealing with a psychopath here. So there really is no way to understand what he’s up to. But if I had to guess, I think he’s just trying to scare us. Warn us in some way to maybe waver our decision, to join him.” he said.
“Do you think anybody will, join him I mean?”
Jace blew out a long, deep breath. “I’ve know the clave for years, they’re not the smartest people I’ve meet, stupid even. I don’t think we’ll even have a chance to change our minds. They’ll have already probably made some deal with him.”
“I know I said we should work things out. But, maybe Maryse is right, maybe we should just let the Clave handle it.” said Clary.
“The Clave has the collective intelligence of a pineapple.” said Jace. Clary laughed, and Jace joined in.
Jace pulled Clary into his arms, and she leaned into him resting her head on his shoulder.
“It’s almost midnight.” said Jace. He was right. Staring at her watch, the flower would bloom any minute. She got up and pulled Jace up too. Clary gazed intently at the flower, waiting for its spectacular show.
Then it bloomed. Clary was mesmerized by the sight, her hand itching for a pencil and paper. She turned to look at Jace and saw him down on one knee.
“Clary I love you.” said Jace, “I know I’ve told you this a million times, but every time I say it I mean it. You’re so brave, talented, and strong and so many things I can’t live without. I can’t live without you. We’ve been through so much together and that whole time you never left. You came for me; you stood by me when no one else did. I know were stronger when we are together.
I love you. I can’t imagine life without you. God, I didn’t even live before you came into my life. I never want to lose you. So Clary,” Jace pulled out a little black box with the Lightwood family ring in it. “Will you marry me?”
Clary stared at Jace for about 5 seconds before saying, “Yes.”
“Yes! Yes! Yes!” she said beginning to cry, happy tears.
Jace stood up smiling putting his arms around her waist as hers went around his neck. They kissed and for a moment, she felt as if it were just her and Jace together in this world. Then a spark, stupid heavenly fire Clary thought, tore them apart. Jace chuckled lightly as he slid the Lightwood family ring onto her finger. It fit perfectly.
