Chapter 9

Clary and Jace were flung out the portal. Jace was the first up and he brushed himself off. He didn’t try to help her up though. Strange? Clary thought. She stood up and said,

“Jace, what-“she was cut off by surprise standing across the room was her mother. Flanked beside her were Luke, Maryse, and Robert Lightwood. They all looked angry, but Jocelyn looked angriest. Isabelle and the others looked nervous. Jace stepped in front of Clary but still gave her room to see everyone. It was like he was shielding her. Jocelyn stepped forward slightly. Her voice was shaky when she spoke.

“What…. the heck…. were you thinking?” Jocelyn started moving towards them. She had tears in her eyes. Clary felt sympathy towards her that she tried to show, she didn’t know what her mother was going to do.

“You… could have died. You could have gotten my daughter killed! But, instead of waiting you went after her and she almost died. How am I supposed to live with that?”

Jace just stood there choosing his words carefully. He looked angry and upset. She slid her hand in his.

“Mom-” Jace cut her off.

“I was thinking about her. I was thinking about your daughter, my fiancée. What was I supposed to do? Sit back and let the Clave handle it.”

“Yes.” said Jocelyn icily. “Not almost get her or yourself or the others killed.”

“Jace, she’s right.” said Maryse.

“What would the Clave have done?” Jace said boldly. He never took his eyes off Jocelyn.

“They would have had a plan, a better one then suicide.” Jocelyn said.

“Suicide?” Jace said bewildered. “I didn’t see anyone else jumping up to do anything. Nobody cared.”

What happened next shocked everyone, even Jace. Jocelyn was strong, but not as strong as everyone realized. She slapped Jace across the face so hard his face was red. Clary screamed.

“Mom!” The fiery redhead jumped in front of Jace outraged.

“I didn’t care!” Jocelyn screamed. “How dare you!”

Clary pushed her mother back and that made Jocelyn angrier. She turned on her daughter face red.

“Clary, you are never to see him again! Are we clear! Now, let’s go were leaving. Luke!” Her mother stormed towards the door. Clary was so angry and scared. She had just come back from Sebastian’s about to break down this wasn’t helping.

“No!” Clary said turning around. She looked her mother straight in the eye, not flinching.

“What did you just say to me?” her mother said. They were back to square one.

“No.” said Clary again. “No I’m not leaving.”

“Excuse me!” her mother said outraged. But Clary didn’t care she was tired of this behavior from her mother.

“For years you took away my memories and kept me away from this. You were running away from your problems. Well I’m not like you! I don’t just run away! I’m staying here. You do whatever you want. But I’m not going anywhere with you.” Clary finished her little speech and everyone was silent. They all stared at her in awe. No one expected her to do what she just did. They all knew Clary could be feisty and headstrong. But, I guess they didn’t think she would say those words. Her mother took a depth breath.

“Fine.” She stared at her daughter. She wasn’t crying but Clary knew she was about too. “Luke, were leaving.”

Luke followed her out the door. He looked back at Clary but quickly turned away before he could do anything. He closed the door lightly. The tension in the room was still there. Everyone could tell. No one said anything. Jace regained composure of himself first.
