Chapter 11
Clary’s eyes were bottomless black pits just like her bothers. Jace backed away but, kept his hand in hers. She still looked like Clary, his Clary, except for the eyes. Her once emerald green ones had now disappeared and were replaced by black ones. Everyone in the room was quite. Sebastian had come over and was smiling at the sight of his sisters eyes.
“It worked.” He said and grinned. “Come on Clary we’ve got places to go, people to see.” He made his way to the window. Clary didn’t follow him just sat on the bed. Jace had expected her to run towards Sebastian and leave with him, that she had changed. Sebastian sensing that she wasn’t there turned around and stared.
“Clary,” he tried again. “It’s time to go.” Clary still didn’t respond. Just then her eyes changed back to normal. It only lasted seconds before they became black again. No matter how long it had lasted her eyes had still switched colors.
Jace didn’t know what to think. Just when thing couldn’t get any crazier, they did. Welcome to my world. He thought. Clary stepped forward.
“It’s not working.” she said. Jace moved toward him and snaked his arm around her waist. She was too close to Sebastian for his liking.
“Soon.” said Sebastian. He eyed Jace; there was irritation in his eyes. The drink had failed, but Jace was getting the feeling that it wouldn’t last. “Soon.” He said again and disappeared. Jace stared at where Sebastian had stood. A lot could happen in 5 minutes. Clary suddenly cried out in pain, hunched over. Jace hovered over her, and looked to see what was wrong. Her eyes were black again.
“Clary, are you alright?” He asked. She slowly stood up again and her eyes returned to normal.
“I’m fine.” she said breathlessly. Jace didn’t want to leave her alone and he could see sleep was what she needed. Jace gestured for the others to leave he took his place beside Clary and the minute she hit the bed she fell asleep. Jace laced his arms around her and fell asleep. Clary’s state, whatever it was, well he would just have to wait.
The next morning Clary was still asleep when Jace woke up. He stared down at her face as his hand snaked through her fiery red hair. Her eyes were the mystery, what he needed to solve. As much as Jace wanted Clary to open her eyes, he hoped she wouldn’t. Jace couldn’t take it if they were black. That would mean that his Clary was gone. And right now, he didn’t know how to get her back. Jace wandered off into the living room to find the others sitting in a sort of daze on the sofas. They were neither speaking nor moving. With everything going on, Jace’s mood wasn’t the greatest.
“Sitting around doing nothing,” he mused. “Sounds like fun. What have I missed?”
“Jace…. What just happened?” asked Isabelle. She was staring at the wall but turned towards him. Simon was sitting close to her and had his head in-between his hands.
“I walked out of the bedroom.” Jace said sarcastically.
“How could we have let this happen?” she said. “How could we have let her drink from that cup?”
“I’m sorry, wasn’t this your idea.”
“I didn’t know.” She mumbled.
“What?” asked Jace irritated.
“I didn’t know, okay!” Isabelle yelled. “I didn’t know he would make her drink from the cup.”
“What so you thought he’d just play doctor and help her? That there wouldn’t be some catch. Of course he would give her the cup!”
“Jace-”
“Don’t!” Jace said standing up. “I don’t need you to tell me you’re sorry, or that it wasn’t my fault. It was. I called on Sebastian, not you. I’m the one who let her walk into that Vampire Hotel. Or, get captured by Valentine. I let her sneak into Idris and nearly get herself killed. Or, let her come after me and almost die. I’m the one who got possessed and didn’t kill Sebastian when I had the chance. It’s always been me.”
