They laid in bed. She had wrapped her arms around his torso loosely. She had her head buried in his neck. She inhaled his scent. The scent had not been in her mind for months. She forgot all about it. She would always think of the scent. She forgot it existed.
She laid right next to him, but she felt herself slipping away. Away from him. He felt it too.
His arm was around her shoulders, he couldn't pull her closer. Not the physical part. But he felt it. Different hands had touched her skin. Those lips had touched another. He could feel himself drowning in it. The angst. The sadness. The wanting for her to admit it.
I know.
He thought. He knew.
Don't let go.
She thought. He knew.
I know. .
He thought. He couldn't handle it. He knew.
Don't let me go. Hold on to me.
She gripped onto him tighter, he knew. She couldn't let him slip away more.
Tell me. I know.
It tore him apart. She was slipping away and he couldn't fix it.
Just don't let go. Don't let go.
She shut her eyes, she regretted it.
Tell me where you've been lately. Where?
Did she mean it? He knew and he wanted her to know he knew.
Please just hold me close.
She stopped herself from shedding any tears. She couldn't let him go.
Did you mean it? You didn't mean it.
He was sure she didn't mean it.
I didn't mean it.
She fought back more tears. She couldn't do it.
They couldn't do this.
