After Stevie and I rejoined the party, I met Shannon and Cammie. I thought they were going to be peeved about having a stranger in their bathroom but they were pretty cool about it. My headache was fading and I could better enjoy the event now. Shannon and Cammie's house had a rustic feel in some of the rooms but other rooms looked like they were straight out of a Better Homes and Gardens magazine. I followed Stevie through the kitchen and onto the back patio. There was a black cast iron table with an umbrella so you could sit in the shade. I sat at one of the matching chairs while Stevie went off to find Sarah.
There was a slightly dead plant on a tiny coffee table on my left so I started picking at the decaying leaves. I didn't really pay attention to the people talking around me because I didn't recognize any of them and they were already deep in their own conversations. After about twenty minutes of picking at the (now) dead plant, I looked around and neither Stevie nor Sarah were in sight. I looked around the big backyard and I just saw a lot of women and a lot of tables set up with snacks. Being an avid snack person, I decided to get up and go see what the spread looked like.
I bumped people on my way over, mumbling apologies but no one really seemed to notice me. I got to the snack tables and saw chips, drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic), there were pretzels, dip, fresh fruit, and tons of other weird party food. I mainly focused on tortilla chips and salsa with a cup of soda. After I filled a paper plate full of chips, I turned around and almost ran right into the woman walking behind me. I froze immediately and put my cup down trying to make sure she didn't fall. Once she was steady, I realized I knew this woman. I looked at her for a second and she gave me a quizzical look and then it hit me. "You're Rose Ellen Dix!"
She looked a little shocked because I kind of, maybe shouted a little bit. She looked at me, seeming to study me, then realized who I was. "And you're Ally Hills! I've seen your channel and it's pretty hilarious."
"So is yours! I love you and Rosie. Congratulations on getting engaged!"
"Aw, thanks. I am pretty brilliant, if I do say so myself." She did an exaggerated hair flip and gave her posh, squinty look.
I couldn't help but laugh. "So where's Rosie at?" I glanced around and didn't see her immediately so I just looked back to Rose.
"She's going to find a charger because her phone died. So who are you here with?"
"I came here with Stevie Boebi and Sarah Croce."
"Oh, doesn't Sarah play rugby?"
"Um, I don't know, I've only known them about a week."
"Oh, well I saw that 'Fancy' cover you made with that speech app."
"That video was a while ago. But yeah, that is a really hard app to talk with. I was stuck talking weird for about an hour."
"I've actually tried that app and it didn't really affect me. If anything it affected Rosie more."
I couldn't tell if that was bragging so I just picked my drink back up sipping it. I glanced around and I finally found Stevie. She was at the top of the stairs on the back patio looking around. I motioned to Rose that I was going to go and she seemed indifferent about it as Rosie walked up and started talking to her. As I started to walk up to Stevie, I saw her eyes lock on me and then she waited for me. "Did you find Sarah?"
"No, actually, I was hoping she was out here."
"Nope, haven't seen her out here." Part of me was happy that Sarah hadn't been found. I know it's selfish and a little dramatic but I like it when it's just the two of us. Even if I can't be with Stevie, I want her in my life. She's really bright and happy. And beautiful, don't forget beautiful. I looked up (out of my little daydream) and Stevie's prefect eyebrows were furrowed in confusion. I knew I had to help her go look for Sarah. "Come on, let's check the house again."
I dumped my plate of chips in the trash when no one was looking and I followed Stevie back into the house. We checked the living room, kitchen, even the basement and didn't find her. When we went back near the patio doors, I heard someone laughing and Stevie whipped her head around. I turned to See Sarah walking with Shannon laughing.
"Babe, where were you?" Stevie asked, walking up to Sarah and giving her a short kiss. I made tiny vomiting sounds in the back of my head.
"Shannon was just giving me a tour. It's actually really amazing what they've done with the place. It makes me want to redecorate our place."
When Sarah said that, in kind of finally hit me that they lived together. I hadn't really thought about it but now I know they are pretty serious. I suddenly felt awful about my crush on Stevie. How would I feel if she was my girlfriend and someone else was crushing on her like this? I headed out the front, making sure Stevie and Sarah didn't notice me. Out front I leaned on one of the mini pillars to Shannon and Cammie's house. I was sitting there sipping my soda in peace when a small gray cat strutted up to me and started rubbing on my legs. I sat down on the gravel and the cat plopped into my lap. I didn't know whose cat this was because I think Shannon's allergic. "Must be a neighbor's cat." I thought. I started petting him and he began purring almost instantly. After a while of petting him, I'd stop and he'd nibble a little on my fingertips to get me to pet him again.
"You love me, right?" I asked him, trying to get him to look at me. He stared me in the eye and head butted me, rubbing on my face. "That's what I thought." I laughed and hugged him a little. Then I heard someone chuckle behind me.
I turned around to see Stevie standing in the doorway staring at me. "What?" I asked. The cat started to stare at her too.
"Nothing. That's just kind of adorable." She smiled and my stomach dropped. I couldn't get over my crush if she kept smiling at me like that. The cat hopped out of my lap and started rubbing on Stevie's legs. "Aww." She said picking him up and petting him.
"Oh I see how it is." I said to him. It was a little ridiculous talking to the cat but Stevie laughed again and he head butted her too. I noticed Sarah wasn't behind Stevie. "Where's Sarah?"
"She's saying goodbye to everyone."
"We're leaving?"
"Yeah. Sarah has work in the morning and we're filming a video for YouTube tonight so this was as long as we could stay." She put down the cat and he started rubbing on my legs again.
"Oh okay. And is Sarah going to be driving on the way back?" I asked, not trying to sound like I was making fun of what happened earlier.
She laughed anyway. "Yes actually. I called shotgun."
I acted like I was upset. "Dang it, I wanted shotgun."
"Too bad, I already called it." She said right as Sarah appeared behind her. The cat got scared and ran off but Stevie and Sarah didn't seem to notice. "You ready to go babe?" Sarah nodded and we all piled back into Stevie's car. I sat behind Sarah in the car so I could lean my non-injured side of my head against the window. Also so I could sneak glances at Stevie. What? I'm only human. I kept saying to myself that I needed to get over my crush but it was getting harder and harder the more time I spent with her, but the time I spent with her was really nice. I still don't know what I'm going to do.
