Evie was roughly deposited on the old, ripped living room couch, kicking and yelling the whole way.
"I can walk, you bastard!" she growled, irritated at his manhandling of her. She straightened herself out on the couch and grumpily settled into it.
"Genevieve..." she heard the warning voice of her mother from the side of the room. She was leaning against the wall, looking a mix of exhausted, upset, and scared all at once. Evie had never seen her mother look like this, and it sort of terrified her. The two goons who had been following her yesterday stood off to the side, completely still.
The stranger also looked over to the older woman and turned his attention onto her.
"Isabel! You've aged well." He smirked. "How long has it been?" The man sounded sarcastic and patronizing, yet sinister.
Evie's mother's eyes flickered over to Evie on the couch. "It's been over sixteen years, Harry" she gritted out through her teeth.
Harry. That was this man's name? It seemed too... innocent for him.
"Really? Only sixteen? It's felt much longer, for some reason." Harry looked livid as he stood before her, his fists clenched at his sides and face turning red.
And also... what the hell were they talking about? They were making no sense.
"Mom?" Evie's voice sounded timid and confused. "What's going on?"
Harry's attention immediately focused on her. His eyes seemed to soften a bit, before hardening again. He turned back to her mother with a sardonic chuckle.
"You really haven't told her anything, have you? How could you just keep it from her like that? What were you going to do when she started turning?" Turning? Into what?
"I wanted to protect her! I wanted to give her a good life, away from-"
Evie's mother was cut off by Harry. "Away from me, is that what you were going to say?" He sounded even more bitter than usual. "And great job, giving her a good life, Isabel. Look around at this shithole you call a house!"
"I've done everything I could!" Evie's mother was full-on yelling now. Evie'd never seen her so angry, not even when she caught Evie sneaking out a few months ago to go to a party. "Did you think it was easy for me, after Jonathan died? To just begin a brand new life with a newborn baby, all while trying to protect her from the Creatures, from the other Salvators who would love to see her dead, from you especially?"
Evie was beyond confused at this point.
Harry's eyes narrowed on Isabel, and he took in a breath as if he was about to speak. Evie cut him off.
"Will you guys stop arguing and tell me what the hell is happening!" Evie was honestly fed up.
Harry and her mother snapped their heads towards her, both looking almost surprised to see her there, as if they had forgotten about her in the midst of their arguing. Arguing about her.
Harry grinned bitterly. "Do you want to tell her or should I?" he asked Evie's mother.
"I- oh my goodness." Isabel buried her face in her hands, then ran them through her hair. She looked tired. "I had hoped this day would never come. I've never even thought about how... how to talk about it."
"Mom," Evie said softly. "Just tell me."
"I- I don't even know where to start." Her mother was flustered.
Evie decided to give her a starting point. "Who is he?" Evie asked, nodding her head at Harry, who was staring darkly at the both of them.
"That's Harry, sweetheart. He's... an old acquaintance of your father's."
