I peel my eyes open to see a bright empty room. A hospital. I sit up, my muscles feel extremely tired. I stretch and move around and make myself comfortable. Shit. The car. The accident. Luke and Lizzy. I click the nurse button a billion times and finally one comes in.
"Wow, you're finally up sweetie. You feeling alright?" She says, checking my pulse and feeling around.
"I'm fine. Where's Luke and Lizzy?"
"The two who were with you?"
"Yes."
"In the Lobby. They're fine, you were thrown out the car but thank God you only broke a leg and two ribs. Knocked yourself out pretty good though."
Thank God? I bunch my nose up, looking at my big cast foot. It looks ridiculously large.
"Could you go get them?"
"Yes, sweetie. I'll get a doctor too. You will be able to go home today, I believe."
I watch her walk out. What happened? Was it my fault?Luke and Lizzy walk in, they don't look banged up, just some bandages. I mostly see exhaustion in their features.
"We're sorry, Danielle." They say in unison.
"For what?"
"We were arguing and you couldn't focus, even if the guy was in the wrong. We're sorry." Lizzy says. I smile at her. She hugs me softly, careful with my ribs.
"You're in trouble." Luke says. I blow out, roughing up my hair.
"Didn't I see that coming."
"David is a dick." Lizzy spits. I shrug as a doctor walks in. Lizzy hops off the bed, giving him a shy smile.
"You're a lucky young lady, you could've ended up like the drunk driver who hit you." The doctor says.
"What happened?" I ask, tilting my head.
"His car flipped and he cracked his skull on the concrete. He's dead. Your vitals look fine, you look fine. You feel okay?"
"Fine."
"Pick up your prescription for pain and your crutches are in the corner. Have a good holiday, kids."
He smiles warmly and I limp out with them. I feel sick to my stomach thinking about the guy who almost killed us, my entire soul aches.
Before I can feel anymore sympathy for the dead man, my sad knight walks through the sliding doors.
He hugs me tenderly and I don't mind the pain in my ribs.
"I love you so much. I thought I lost you, baby." I whispers to my hair. I smile to his chest, inhaling his scent.
"I love you." I say, kissing his lips. His kiss untamed and I love it. I was supposed to ask him something. What was it? Shit.
"Darla was a made up girl. You never checked the message." He says, passing me my phone. I laugh, taking it. I guess we won't be fighting. The crutches annoy me as I try to limp out. Stupid things. Joe holds in his laughs and I groan. Wait, where's Mom? She didn't care to show up? A horn blows as we make it outside. Mom is in the passenger seat, Davie in the driver. Joe is away from me faster than I can blink. I make my way to their car. It's going to be a very long night, I can already see it.•••••••••••••
"You stole your- my car." Davie spits.
"She was trying to-"
"Hush. You wrecked it. You think things come free here? I work hard so you can sit around. No, no, no. You will pay me back if that means I have to take your bed."
I sit staring at this crazy man. I could've died and he's angry about a car accident, it's not like I don't have my license.
"David, be easy. She's alive." Mom says. My blood is boiling beyond control and I feel hurt. She wasn't even there when I woke up. She didn't help me in the car. She's barely been a mother.
"Be easy, Joan?! She needs to grow up! She isn't getting younger."
I stand up, my heart throbbing more than my broken ribs. I don't listen to them or anything. Nothing good is happening from moving here.
