The ride was long and quiet, besides my music blasting through my headphones. If my mother spoke at all, it was only for the imaginary people to hear.  We pull up to some condos that look nice and clean. Bigger than our last apartment, I guess. I take in the sight of Davie standing in front of the apartment. Mom stops and jumps out, running to him. They kiss, hug, and laugh. I drag myself over, not really wanting to exist.

"Well hey Danielle, you look tired. Leave everything in the van. Movers will bring it up tomorrow." Davie says. Someone likes spending their money on every little thing.

"Thanks..." I mutter.

We climb up the stairs to the huge condo and I'm the least bit astonished by how clean it is. I guess the cleaners visited.

"Oh Davie! I love it!" My mother squeals. It's impressive but nothing to raise his ego with.

"I'm glad you do, Joan. It's all for you and my step daughter." Davie says, adding on the charm. What the hell.

I start to explore, leaving the two love birds to think and goo over each other.

"Oh Davie! Is that a steel magnolia in the glass vase!?" I mutter, faking an accent.

"Yes, actually it is."

I turn around to see a tall guy with chocolate brown hair and gray like eyes staring at me. He smirks and I squint my eyes at him.

"I knew that, butt face. Who are you? The butler." I growl. The guy is a total sex god, damn he is sexy. I can't be mean to him.

"No, I work with Davie. I was just stopping by to meet his new step daughter and wife." He says with a smirk.

"Don't call me that, what is your name?"

"Joe, and you're Danielle."

"Thanks for reminding me."

He chuckles a heart throbbing chuckle. Damn.

"I'll see you around, beautiful."

He walks out, leaving me and my hormones raging. Damn.  This is gonna be one long summer.

Settling in was easy considering I don't have to do anything.  Davie took us to dinner at this small fancy restaurant, that's funny considering everything Davie does is BIG. It's been hard for me to pay attention, after meeting that Joe guy. I don't know what to do. He works with Davie. Davie is thirty-eight. Is Joe that old? He can't be, he looks young. Maybe twenty or twenty-two. Too bad we could never be anything since I'm seventeen. I turn over in my bed, facing the window. The one time I meet a heart throbbing guy, he's too old for me. This sucks ass.

Mom walks into my room, a small grin on her face.

"You settled, sweetie? You look cozy and warm." She says. My mom isn't the best at making things better. She knows how I feel about this move, about leaving my friends, about starting over again. Without dad. She knows but her heart doesn't understand.

"Yeah, I like it here." I lie. I throw her a smug smile and she grins a little bigger.

"I knew you would! Maybe we could shop tomorrow, get some good clothes! What do you think?"

I can't break her heart now, she's making an effort.

"Sure thing mom. Good night, I love you."

"I love you too and Davie says good night."

The door closes leaving me in dark and silences. Mom has a guy, why can't I?
