Life at Isla Gigantes (Part 7)

After 16 grueling hours of travelling, they arrived in Estancia. They still have to ride a boat for two hours going to the island. While on the boat, they asked the boatman about his Uncle Penoy (Wally). The boatman whose name is Juan (Jerald) doubted if he is really Penoy's nephew since Dodong (Alden) is very handsome unlike his uncle.

"Uncle mo ba talaga si Penoy?", Juan asked.

"Oo", Dodong answered. "Ano ba ang itsura nya?"

"Shaggy kasi si Ka Penoy. Ikaw naman, napakagwapo at makapal ang buhok.", Juan replied.

"Anong ibig sabihin ng shaggy?" Dodong asked again.

"Shagilid na lang ang buhok, hehehe." Juan replied.

When they arrived in the main island, it was not difficult for them to find where Uncle Penoy lives since there are only few people living in the island.

Uncle Penoy welcomed them warmly at his home after he read the short letter from his brother Pendong. He was happy to finally have some company at home after his wife died 5 years ago. They don't have any children.

Dodong and Ursula explained to his uncle their situation and asked him if they could stay there for a few months. Uncle Penoy agreed as long as they can adapt to the life in the island.

Dodong and Ursula decided to get married once Ursula turns 18 on March, which is less than 2 months from now. Uncle Penoy agreed and told them it was timely because there will be a kasalang bayan during their town fiesta on April.

It was not difficult for Dodong to adapt the life in the island. He joined Juan, who became his close friend, in fishing and selling them in the mainland.

It was another case for Ursula. She was used to a pampered and comfortable life. But it did not stopped her from trying. Through many errors, she learned how to adjust. She learned how to cook and do household chores.

Even before they arrived in the island, Dodong promised Ursula that he will help her finish her studies first before getting her pregnant. Ursula also promised Dodong that once she finished her studies and be able to find work. She will be the one to help him finish his studies also.

In order that they will not be traced back. Dodong asked Uncle Penoy to personally asked his parents to come to their wedding. He also told his parents that he won't be able to write them or text them for fear of being tracked down by Ursula's family. He will just send them money through money transfer. His parents assured him that they are okay. His dad is getting better and doesn't need much assistance now so his mom can find a work again.

A month after their wedding, Ursula was accepted in a nearby state college in the mainland. But because Dodong's work requires him to be at the sea most of the time, he decided to let Ursula rent in a dorm. Ursula will just go home to the island every weekend and Dodong will just visit her every morning .

For two years and a half , that was their set up. One day, Ursula finds out that she is pregnant. She happily shared the news to Dodong. Dodong apologize to her for not fulfilling his promise of not getting her pregnant before she finish college. Ursula assured him that it was her choice to get pregnant with their child.

Since she is only a semester away from her graduation, she decided to continue her studies. But this time, she didn't travel back to the island every week. Dodong decided to just rent a house for them in the mainland so he can take care of her. He returned to selling isaw and barbecue.

The graduation of Ursula came. After Ursula accepted her diploma, her water broke.

Ursula had a hard time giving birth. Since their town doesn't have modern equipment, the doctor was not able to save the life of Ursula. The doctor informed Dodong that he has a healthy baby girl. When Dodong asked about Ursula, the doctor apologized and told him they did all they can to save her but in the end they were not able to save her life.

Dodong cannot believe what he's hearing. He denied it and shouted at the doctor. He held the doctor's coat and told him to take back what he said. Juan stopped him and held him. He felt so helpless and just kept on crying.
