Daniel Webster was an outspoken politician for most of his life. He negotiated the border treaty between the U.S. and Canada, preventing war. He was also selected as one of the five greatest U.S. orators, and was a member of Congress in the House of Representatives for ten years. The words of this good man show us the value of Christian living.
Webster shows that whatever casts men to be good brothers in Christ will spur them on in the model of unchastisable patriotism.
There once was a man who was a man of God, following him in every way. He was walking down a road one day, when he saw another man cowering in the corner. He stopped and asked the man if he was all right, but the man just stared into space, shivering. The good Christian immediately called for help, and the poor man's life was saved. Thus by being a Christian, and loving others, he was a good citizen as well.
There was another man in the same situation, except this man was not a Christian, but an evil man. This man walked down the street to see a poor man begging. He kicked him, scattering the coins in his collection. A policeman saw him and arrested him for assault and battery. The man languished in prison, hoping for bail, but it never came. He received the punishment of a bad citizen on earth, and of a heathen in hell.
Likewise, a student who struggles through essays and compositions in the beginning will eventually be able to write novels and books of great quality. If you work at something hard enough and long enough, the result of that toil will burn the essence of the work into your being.
Billy Graham is a modern example. Calling millions to serve Christ Jesus, many came because of his work. He knew what God wanted for us as Christians, and so he supported the Civil Rights movement of Martin Luther King, giving us all equality. He was a spiritual advisor to many U.S. Presidents, and was a great man, citizen, and Christian as he spread God's love to the world.
George Washington once said, "We are persuaded that good Christians will always be good citizens, and that where righteousness prevails among individuals the Nation will be great and happy. Thus while just government protects all in their religious rights, true religion affords to government it's surest support." If righteousness prevails, our nation will prosper. When our citizens are Christians, they respect the law due to a higher personal commitment. This shows that a country's greatest supports are it's God-fearing, government supporting Christians.
Therefore, realize, men of Christ, that who you are is what you do. Be men striving to follow Christ, then our country will flourish to the utmost degree. Daniel Webster realized this. Do you?
