The Lightning Thief. I read the title of the book my Aunt Beth had given me.

"Just the best books for my favorite niece! It's a book by Rick Riordan and I think it is really good. You're gonna love it, Sam." Beth smiled at me. I looked at the back to read the synopsis and I noticed it was meant for ages 9-14, but I knew better than to let an age recommendation stop me.

That day, was my fifteenth birthday and both sides of my extended family were gathered at my house in Colorado, which had more space outside than inside. We were gathered outside, next to the shed.

My dad's side is the Mexican side. He has 3 sisters who are all married and have kids. That whole side is mostly fluent in Spanish and they love confusing the other side of my family by chattering loudly in Spanish. My mom's side is white, to put it bluntly. She is probably descended from people from a million European countries. My mother has one sister: my Aunt Beth, and a brother who's married and has 4 boys. I, however, am an only child.

"Thank you so much Beth!" I pulled her in for a hug. Beth was a single thirty year old fangirl of pretty much every fandom possible and has made it very clear she doesn't want to be married. I take after her.

I had opened the rest of the presents after everyone left and I got a stack of Barnes and Noble gift cards. I was very happy about that. Later on in the night, my mom made me go up to my room to sleep. I took up The Lightning Thief, turned on my lamp, and flopped on to my bed. I opened the book.

Look, I didn't want to be a half blood...

5 months later

The elevator dinged open and my parents and I rushed out into the hospital hallway.

"Mom, what happened?" I asked worriedly.

"Your Aunt Beth has cancer in her lungs. She passed out yesterday and your uncle drove her here." She said.

I felt my stomach drop. I sped up my pace as I looked for room 216. My mom saw it first and put her hand on the doorknob, took a deep breath, and opened the door. I walked in and I saw my grandparents sitting next to a hospital bed where Beth lay. She looked very pale and skinny. Aunt Beth smiled weakly when she saw us.

We all hugged her and conversed for a few minutes with her and my grandparents. I noticed they were trying to avoid the subject of her health, but I understood why.

"Guys, can I get a moment with Samantha alone please?" Beth asked. Everyone muttered "Sure," or "Of course," and they filed out of the room.

I sat down at the chair right next to my aunt's bed and held her hand. "Hi Beth," I said meekly.

"Sam, I know I don't have much time left. So, I wanted to give you something my book nerd aunt gave to me when I was your age." She reached under her sheets and pulled out a little 4 inch bottle and held it up. It had a cork cap and inside was a brilliant sapphire liquid.

"What is it?" I asked Beth.

"I don't know actually, but I do know that it's very old, and valuable. It has been passed down through the generations for a while and I'm giving it to you." She held it out to me and I took it. It was smooth and cold to the touch.

"Also some reading material," My aunt gave me a list of book title and authors. I chuckled. Even in sickness she was still thinking of books I should read.

"Thanks Beth," I hugged her.

After that we talked about anything and everything. I guess we lost track of time because half an hour later my mom's head popped in the room.

"Samantha, we have to go. You are going to be late for your tennis lesson!" she said.

"Aww," Beth and I chorused in unison. "You'd better get going, Sam. I'll see you later," Beth said.

"Ok, bye." I bent down to give her a kiss on her forehead.

"Love you, Sam."

"Love you, too." I got up and followed my mom out of the hospital.

But that was the last time I ever talked to my aunt. According to my grandparents, an hour later Beth stop breathing and the surgeons couldn't revive her.
