Chapter 3
I finally slunk around the last corner and made it to the pipe lined alleyway. I breathed out a gust of air that I didn’t even know I’d been holding and slowed my pace from a jog to a speed walk. It only took me about fifteen minutes to reach the old faded and peeling blue paint of the abandoned fish and chips shop, and I paused when I did, thinking about my situation for a moment and all of the scenarios that could play out if I walked through that door. It could be another ambush. Valentine could be there. Zane could be completely corrupted – which I was also pretty sure was more than likely already. I could be killed, or worse... Infected. What was I doing? I mean I was normally pretty reckless but this was beyond reckless. This was completely and utterly hands down the stupidest thing I had ever done. This was irresponsible and thoughtless and I would most likely be killed tonight because of it. Great job Harlow, really top-notch.
“How long are you gonna stand there for?” asked a hushed voice that made me jolt to attention and draw the gun from my belt. Zane put his hands up in an ‘I surrender’ sign, a shocked but amused look on his face. “Don’t shoot I was only asking,” he said, the corners of his lips pulled up into a smirk. I sighed and reluctantly lowered the gun, placing it back but leaving the leather sheath open so I could get to it quickly. I stayed where I was for a moment, looking at Zane. I peered past him into the dark shop for a minute or so before letting my gaze drop back on him. He raised his eyebrows, holding his hands out to the sides, palms up. “Well? What are you just gonna stand there all night? Don’t you know how dangerous this is?” he asked. Those words made me want to grab the gun and shoot him then and there. I refrained, simply because I needed answers.
“Yes, I know how dangerous this is. What do you think I’m stupid?” I hissed. He smirked again and went to speak but I cut him off. “Don’t answer that,” I said as I hopped up the concrete steps and turned sideways so I didn’t brush past him when I stepped into the room. My whole body was tensed and ready for a fight. I had one hand placed over the handle of my gun, and my other was poised over the stake at my hip. My eyes had already adjusted to the pitch black from being outside for so long, so I carefully scanned my surroundings. Thankfully none of his pale and toothy friends were waiting to rip out my jugular. I sighed and let my muscles relax a little as I turned to face him. I couldn’t help but wonder where the bodies from earlier had gone. I’d been in such a hurry to leave that I hadn’t cleaned them up like I should have. Maybe Zane did it.
“Did you seriously think that this was a trap?” he asked, looking genuinely curious.
“Do you blame me? Come on!” I defended, pointing to him. He rolled his unnerving, jewel red eyes and sat down on the floor. I knew why he’d done that, it was the same reason why neither of us had pulled out a torch or lit a candle. If we stayed standing or shed some light it would make us easier to spot, which is why I sat down in front of him, making sure I was in a position that would be easy to jump out of in case things went downhill quickly. I stayed quiet, waiting for him to speak first. Apparently we both had the same idea.
“So?” he asked after a few silent moments. I raised my eyebrows expectantly, making him roll his eyes at me. “What did your source say?”
“Well...” I started, moving uncomfortably and avoiding his eyes simply because they creeped me out. If I didn’t look at him I could pretend he was just another hunter. But when I caught sight of his eyes it quickly brought me back into reality, in which I was having a normal conversation with a member of the walking dead club.
