Benny and Jen were waiting for us outside their dorm building for us, so we collected them quickly and headed off for Amber, Adam and James' dorm. Our little group made their way to the building and we all snuggled into the elevator before meeting Adam in the lounge. "She's taking forever!" Adam groaned when Amber was still getting ready and time was ticking. He pulled out his phone and sent her another text message just like he had done the past 13 times. We all stood in our little group and James was poking my ribs causing me to squeak, "Will you stop you asshole?" I said a little too loudly and I heard a groan from someone, I swatted James shoulder as Amber walked out of the elevator. James tickled my ribs again, "God damn it James will you stop it already I'm gonna beat your ass with a pillow if you don't stop!" I said, a little louder, but still too loud, I smacked a hand over my mouth and looked across the lounge, I saw a girl with deep red hair clenching her hands over her laptop keyboard and I became very conscious of my tone and volume. I faded out of the conversation but Luna pulled me back out, "Leave it, ignore her, you just gotta..." Luna started but I interrupted "Just keep swimmin', just keep swimming, just keep swimming, just keep ..." I sang but was interrupted by a yell that sent silence through the lounge, "Can you please just shut up? I'm so tired of hearing your annoying ass speak. Do us all a favor and just shut the hell up! Please!" Someone yelled and I turned to see the girl with the red hair, her computer shut, and her eyes were burning themselves into mine. My smile dropped and the silence was screaming at me.
The emptiness rang through my body. I thought it was gone, it went away... After I met Benny, Luna, AJ... and James... they made it go away... didn't they? That very first day, I felt... whole. But now it's back... because some bitch told me something I've known and called my whole life... I could feel the dullness engulf me and I felt like I was going to let it, let the blackness swallow me whole again... until I felt a hand, lace it's fingers between mine... "M-Marissa?" the voice called, pulling me away from the empty black hole and towards the bright green eyes that made my heart flutter. I felt tentative swipe hair out of my eyes and behind my ear, "S-Sunshine?" James called again, his hand squeezing mine. A tear rolled down my cheek without my consent. "Grow the hell up bitch. God damned annoying children in college, dumbasses... probably hear on a scholarship... god damn athletes... stupid dicks..." the girl scoffed as she stormed off into a dorm room, I flinched when she slammed it shut. "H-hey Mar..." James trailed off, "Sunshine..." he whispered again, trying to pull my attention away from the door, that belonged to the dorm, that held the girl who had screwed up my mind beyond repair. "I-I want to go b-back to the dorm..." I muttered and James nodded slightly, "I can walk you back..." he trailed off as another tear rolled down my cheek. "No. I... I want to go alone; you guys should go... go have fun..." I said, gazing at the stairs, the need to bolt out of there was silenced by another squeeze of my hand and gentle emerald eyes. "I'll make sure she gets there safe and I'll stay with her you guys... go, and tell me how it goes." James said and before I could protest, they all nodded and James let go of my hand. Everyone either hugged me or patted my shoulder lightly, I didn't want to be pitied but it didn't feel like that with them... Adam was the only one who patted my shoulder but I still felt him linger longer and give James a sad look. I'm not a burden stop that! my mind screamed. After everyone piled into the elevator and waved goodbye, James grabbed my hand and laced our fingers together again and tugged me lightly towards the stairs. "You don't need to do this..." I said quietly and James stopped in the middle of the stairwell and looked up at me, the few inches I got from being a step behind him gave me a weird view because now we were eye level. "Y-you could've gone with them... and let me stay here." I said and James smiled gently at me, "now what fun would that be?" he whispered before tugging me further down the stairwell. He stopped me at the bottom step and motioned for me to sit down, I did and he sat down next to me. "What are we doing?" I asked and James held up a finger before pointing towards the door, I heard the ting of an elevator and then quiet whispers.
