Liah’s Birthday
Liah’s POV:
“Happy birthday baby”, I heard a voice whisper early in the morning. Much earlier than usual.
“Mmm”, I mumbled. I felt mum sit on my bed next to me and place her hand on my shoulder as she lay down beside me. “It’s too early for this”, I groaned into my pillow.
“It’s your birthday”, mum whispered again. “My baby’s growing up”, I felt her stoke my hair with her hand softly. I turned over so I was now facing her and smiled.
“Thanks mummy”, I said closing my eyes again. She continued to brush her hand through my blonde hair, relaxing me.
“You mean everything to me”, she continued to talk soothing me. “I couldn’t live without you. I’m so blessed to have you in my life. I’m blessed you actually put up with me nearly 24/7”, she said making me laugh a little. “And I’m blessed you’re my best friend kid”, she kissed my forehead. “Happy sweet sixteenth baby”, she whispered before just lying next to me till my alarm went off for school like she did every year since I could remember.
“BEEP BEEP BEEP!”
My eyes fluttered and I rolled over to turn my alarm off before closing my eyes again.
“Come one kiddo”, mum whispered now awake as well. “Gotta get up for school”, she patted my back. I sighed and pulled the covers off me and got out of bed. I turned around and saw mum with her eyes closed still in my warm bed.
“And you think that you can chill in my bed on MY birthday? Unbelievable”, I laughed.
“I’m your mummy, I pushed you out, hush child”, was her response. I just rolled my eyes smiling.
“Well you have work at 8, so get up lazy bum!” I chucked a toy at her.
“Geez, she turns 16 and bosses you around”, mum said getting up.
“Move it! I gotta get dressed”, I laughed pushing her out of my room finally.
I quickly got my school uniform out of my wardrobe and slipped it on. I walked out into the bathroom mum and I shared. We had a pretty small house seeing as it was only me and mum, but mum made sure at least my bedroom was big. She always said I could do whatever with my bedroom because it was my own space.
I straightened my hair for the day and applied light make-up.
Every year for as long as I could remember, mum always took me out for breakfast on my birthday. It was something we always did because we wanted to make our birthday’s big.
“Mum, will you be alright? I mean after last night?” I asked mum during breakfast.
“I’ll be fine Liah, but kid right now, today is YOUR birthday! It’s all about you!” Mum grinned.
“Of course”, I said smiling.
Once mum and I ate, she dropped me off at school and headed to work.
“Hey birthday girl”, Paige said walking up to me and giving me a huge hug that almost squished my tiny self completely.
“Haha, hey”, I said getting my books out of my locker.
“Finally we’re both 16!”
“We are indeed! And you’re legal”, she winked. I just rolled my eyes. “Well I may have a birthday present for you, BUT”, she said exaggerating the but, “you’ll have to wait till tomorrow!”
