Lunch out with Ollie was hands-down one of Kalana’s favorite things in the world. It had only been a daily thing for about a week, and she had decided that she had no idea how she ever lived without it.

Oliver Madison was the sweetest girl anyone could ever come across. From what she had already shared with Kal, she was an honors student in high school, and she played the cello in orchestra. Most of her friends had encouraged her to start listening to rock music, which had brought her to the music store in the first place.

The day after she had come in to buy said recommended albums, Oliver had come into the store, overly excited to tell Kalana that she loved every single album that she'd bought. And thus was the beginning of a new friend/mentorship.

“So,” Kalana was saying, sipping a Shirley Temple as she smiled at her younger friend from across the table, “still loving those albums I sold you last week?”

Am I?” Ollie exclaimed, almost choking on her Coke as she leaned forward across the table. “Of course I am! I absolutely love every single one of them…” she trailed off, the smile slowly disappearing from her face as she leaned her head on her hand. “I uh… I can’t say the same thing for my mum however…”

“Oh?” Kalana raised an eyebrow, the slightest bit of curiosity becoming present in her tone.

“Yeah…” she sighed, stirring her drink with her straw. “She kinda hates it to be honest. Constantly telling me to turn it off, and reminding me every day that only reject kids listen to that kind of stuff…”

Kal’s eyes widened, and she sat up straight. “You’re kidding me, right?”

“No, not really…” Ollie said, shaking her head sadly. “My mum doesn’t appreciate the fact that I’m really into music. I can only practice my cello when she’s out, or she’ll complain about the “racket.” A lot of the time she’s trying to convince me to quit orchestra and focus on cheerleading full time… but I-I can’t…”

“Hey, I get it,” Kalana nodded, reaching out and placing a hand on her friend’s shoulder. “Your mom obviously is oblivious to how much music means to you. But hey, if you can’t talk to her about stuff I’m always here. The younger, slightly less responsible adult that will always listen to your problems.”

Ollie grinned up at her, pulling her hair to the side. “Thanks a bunches, Kal. It really means a lot, I hope you know that.”

“Nah, it’s no problem,” she shrugged, grinning back. “Anything for my new friend.”

The younger girl just smiled in response, leaning down and taking another sip of her soda.

“On another note though…” Kalana said quietly, leaning forward, “guess who’s coming to town in a couple months?”

“Who?” Ollie asked, cocking her head.

“None other than Twenty Øne Piløts themselves,” she answered, her grin widening.

Oliver’s eyes widened, and she perked up, instantaneously becoming excited. “Really? When?

June 21st,” Kalana squealed happily. “I’ve been saving up forever to get tickets for one of their shows, and I’m so close! If I can get some extra hours in before then, I’ll definitely be able to get tickets for the show.”

Wait, wait, wait,” Ollie cut in, holding her hand up. “June 21st?!

“Um, yeah… that was the date, if I’m not mistaken…”

Kal! June 21st is my birthday!

Kalana stared at her for a second, before grinning. “NO WAY!

Ohmygosh, YES!” Oliver exclaimed, practically jumping up and down in her seat. “I’m turning fifteen on the twenty-first of June. And, oh my lord, my mom probably has something hella boring and awful and preppy planned for it that I’ll hate. Like last year, she took me to some fancy five-star Italian place. I don’t even like Italian food that much!”

“Whoa, whoa, calm down there, Ollie,” Kal said, laughing the slightest bit.

Sitting back, she rubbed the back of her neck as her cheeks flushed. “Sorry… It’s just… I’d do anything to go to that concert for my birthday. You’re one lucky ducky, Kalana Mayes.”

Kalana was silent for a while, just looking at her friend as if she was contemplating her appearance. In her head, she was trying to calculate everything. It’s not like she had a life, she could certainly work around the clock…

“I’m not the only lucky ducky. If it’s the last thing I do, Ollie, you are going to that concert with me. Consider it your birthday present.”

Oliver fell silent, staring at her in shock. “Kal… you-you don’t have to-”

“Oh yes I do. You’re going to that concert if it’s the last thing I do,” she insisted, placing her hands on her lap. “And you can’t convince me otherwise.”

With that, Ollie jumped out of her chair, and ran to the other side of the table, before tackling Kalana in a hug. “Oh my goodness thank you… you’re amazing…”

“Pfft, nah,” Kal disagreed, smiling and hugging her back.

“I’m serious. This is the nicest thing anyone has ever done for me. Ever. I’m so lucky to have met you…”

Kalana’s eyes widened and she just sat there, dumbfounded. No one had ever told her something like that before. This was a very, very new feeling. One, however, that she could definitely get used to.

The smile quickly returned to her face, and she hugged Oliver even tighter.

“And I’m lucky to have met you, kiddo.”
