About five minutes before the band was supposed to show up, Dillon poked his head into the room, looking around until his eyes laid on Kal.
"Hey, Kal. There's someone on the phone for ya," he said.
"Thanks, Dillon," she responded with a smile, before spinning around in her spinny chair to face the phone that was sitting on the table in front of her. Picking, and leaning back in the chair, she answered, the smile never leaving her face.
"Heyo, Kalana Mayes speaking. How may I help you?"
"Kalana?"
Kal froze, her eyes widening as she heard the voice on the other end of the line. All the color drained from her face, and panic immediately shot through her body.
"How did you find me?" she finally asked, her voice shaking.
"It's not too hard when your name is plastered all over Twitter and every other social networking site."
"Leave me alone."
"Why would I do that?"
"You never wanted me in the first place. I thought you were happy when I ran."
"You're still as naive as you were when you were sixteen."
"I want you to leave me alone!" she yelled, before slamming the phone back down, ending the call before the person on the other end could say anything else.
Kalana leaned forward, burying her fingers in her hair. Why. Why now? Of all the times, why now?
A couple seconds later, a knock sounded on the door and a familiar face peeked in, glancing around until his gaze fell on Kalana.
"Kal?"
The girl looked up at the voice, her eyes wide at first, but then relaxing when she saw who it was. "Oh. Hey, Jasper. Is the rest of the band on their way?"
"Yeah. We're just waiting on Bella. She texted me earlier to inform me that she was tuning her bass so she was going to be a little late," he responded, a frown forming on his face. "You don't look very good. Are you alright?"
"Yeah. Yeah, I'm fine," she promised, pushing her fingers through her hair. "Go ahead and start setting up in there. I'll take care of things back here."
Jasper opened his mouth as if he was going to say something, but he just ended up shutting it with a sigh, heading into the recording booth.
Once he was inside, Kal dropped her head into her hands.
It had been three years. Three years. And now all the sudden, her past was coming back to haunt her?
Why?
~~~
"... and she just... called you out of the blue...?"
Kalana sighed, looking back up at the computer screen in front of her. "Yeah. Out of the blue. And I was actually having a pretty nice day."
Tyler, who was on the other side of the skype call, frowned. "What on earth could she want from you?"
"I don't know. That's the problem. After three years of being out of that house and no attempt to find me whatsoever, she just calls my workplace. I don't get it. That woman hated me. I thought she was happy without me. But I guess not."
"Hey, Kal. Don't let her get to you. Even if she wanted to, she can't catch you. You're nineteen."
"Yeah, I know, but-"
"Sh, sh. You'll be okay."
The redheaded girl frowned, picking at her fingernails in silence for a moment before speaking up.
"I hope you're right, Ty."
