So our newest project in geography class is about migration and for this, we are writing about the story of the first person in our family to come to the city that we live in in their perspective. Over a week long break off of school, we were supposed to ask someone in our family to find out the story of how they got here. I forgot to ask my mom until the night before school resumed, and she had barely any information; she couldn't remember if it was my dad's grandparents or hers that got here first, and the information she gave me was pretty vague. Basically all I found out was that it was my great grandparents on one side of my family, idk which, and that if it was my mom's side, my great grandpa moved because of his work in the military. Today we wrote the rough draft of our essays in class, and I obviously couldn't tell the teacher that I knew nothing. So I made most of it up. I even made up the first name of my great grandparents because I didn't know and I just guessed which set of grandparents. I added in a whole bunch of fictional things, like where they came from, how they got here, how old they were, how many children they had, and a whole bunch else. I even wrote down that they had a miscarriage and the story of their last Christmas in their old apartment before they left just to spice it up a bit. I completely bull crapped the whole thing.
As we were typing, the teacher went through what everyone had so far, giving each student notes- mostly saying things like, "Good start, but make sure you use dialogue," or "You have good facts, but try making it into a better story. Paint a picture with your words"
Then she got to mine...She read my first paragraph, and in front of the whole class she was like "Whoah! Rachael this is amazing! I've only read the first paragraph and already... Wow!" And she absolutely loved my writing. A bunch of kids came up to my desk and surrounded my computer screen to read what I had wrote and they seemed pretty impressed, even though most of them weren't even my friends.
I had basically just written a piece of fiction for Geography class, and I was getting praise for it I sat there smiling like an idiot for like twenty minutes and it was just great.
Lesson learned: I should become a journalist, for I have a newfound talent of writing lies that interest people. ;P
