How in the world could this happen?! Max thought as tears filled her eyes. It took all her willpower to keep from bawling in front of Fang, Jeb, Ari, the Whitecoats, the Erasers, even Dylan. She just couldn't believe that they were still alive. Are they all clones, like Dylan?
"I'm so sorry..." Max turned to Fang, who was leaning against the back of their cage, staring past the metal bars at the wall, "this is all my fault. I never meant for this to happen...with the baby, I mean..." Fang finally closed his eyes and took a deep breath.
"Well, now they're going to have to kill us..." Max looked down sadly, "but at least we'll be together." Max shrugged, scooted next to him and took his hand, "and look, this isn't your fault. It was my choice, and...we really should've thought about the consequences..."
"We'll get out of this, don't worry." Fang assured Max, "we'll find Amalda...Phoenix, and the flock, and we'll get out of this hell."
"Oh, Phoenix...Amalda...our first daughter...how could I not remember?!" Max said.
"Amnesia, remember?" Fang said, "but they're about to kill her, and we're stuck here and can't do anything about it." Fang groaned as he held the metal bars of their cage.
"Wait..." Max said, "I hear something..." they both sat silently.
Max?! Fang?! Someone called mentally.
"Do you hear that too?!" Max asked Fang, who nodded.
Are you down there?! The voice called.
Is this Angel?! Max asked.
Um...no, Max. I'm sorry. This is the Voice. The voice said.
Well, what do we do, Voice? Can you tell us where Amal....Phoenix is? Max asked.
She's on the top floor, and she's running out of time! They're planning on crushing her! She's invincible, and physical damage is the only way to kill me...HER. You have to hurry! Sh-She's running out of time! The Voice said, sounding extremely panicked and worried. Max turned to Fang, her eyebrows raised.
Is that all the information you can give us, Voice? Max asked.
I...Phoenix turned herself in to be killed for the freedom of the rest of the flock. They're on their way to save you! But...I just can't take this anymore! I'm going to die soon, and I need you guys to come back and save me! Quick! The Voice shrieked in fear, in a way Max and Fang have never heard the Voice before. Max looked at Fang with shock in her eyes,
"This whole time...the new voice was Phoenix."
