"There!" Angel and Gazzy said simultaneously as they pointed to a pair of metal doors in front of them. The flock ran down as fast as they could and threw the doors open. They looked around the room it was filled with empty cages, and in the center of the room was a big cage, big enough to hold two bird kids.
"Max! Fang!" Nudge called as they ran into the room. Max pulled away from Fang and up to the metal bars. She peered through the darkness.
"Nudge?!" Max called as Fang joined her.
"Over here!" Fang called. The flock ran over and fumbled with the lock.
"Can you get it, Ig?" Gazzy asked as Iggy held the lock and a lock picker in his other hand.
"98%." Iggy answered as he started picking the lock, and in minute, the lock broke open. They swung the door open and they all threw their arms around Max and Fang.
"We missed you..." Nudge said.
"We thought you died." Gazzy added, earning him a hard elbow in his ribs from Angel.
"We were so worried." Max said.
"Where are the twins? Weren't they with you?" Fang asked.
"They were..." Angel said.
"We'll run into them soon. Don't worry. They're fine." Nudge said, "but right now, Amalda's not fine. We need to go save her."
"We know where she is." Iggy said.
"Right, right." Max said as she and Fang scrambled out of the cage. The flock led them out to a window.
"Up here." Angel said as she opened the window. Max poked her head out and looked up at the thirty-some other floors. She kicked off the ledge and extended her wings as she flew higher up. She looked back to see the rest of the flock following her.
"The twins should still be at that level. We can feel their presence." Angel said as she pointed to one of the windows near the top of the building.
"'We'?" Fang asked.
"Me and Gazzy! He has a new ability!" Angel answered as Gazzy was smiling like crazy.
"That's great!" Max smiled, "now let's go. Amalda's running out of time." They all nodded as they flew up to the window and smashed it open. Max rolled on the floor among the shards of glass she broke when she crashed through. The rest of the flock gracefully landed beside her, and Nudge helped Max to her feet.
"Alex! Ally!" Max called. They looked around them in the empty white hallway. Then they saw mist starting to fill the hall, and an invisible form was blowing the most everywhere, until the mist materialized in the shape of a girl, and Ally and Alex stood before them.
"Mom! Dad!" They both beamed as they ran up to Max and Fang and gave them both huge hugs.
"We missed you so much..." Ally said.
"We were so worried about you guys...but we're glad you're all safe." Max smiled as she wrapped her arms around her. She turned to Fang, who had let go of Alex and was hugging Ally. Her heart melted at the look of relief and happiness on Fang's face...the same look he had when Amalda...when Phoenix was born. She smiled, but then remembered their race against time.
"So, we still need to go get Amalda. Fast." Max said.
"She's on the top floor. Only way out is through the window. Since they know we're here, they locked the place down." Gazzy explained.
"We can go through the ceiling!" Nudged suggested
"Or the air vents." Iggy shrugged.
"Iggy! You're brilliant!" Max said as she started scanning the area. She ran right below an air vent in the ceiling, jumped up and crashed through the vent, and motioned for the rest of the flock to follow her. They all flew into the vent and they found their way to Amalda.
