"Look at this girl's outfit! I wish I had that," I said to my best friend Ava. We were looking through fashion magazines in my pink, polka-dotted bedroom. At the time we were just six years old.

Ava and I weren't like most kindergarteners. The other girls in our class liked Barbie dolls and playing dress up. But not us. Ava and I were obsessed with the future. We longed to be sweet sixteen. Nothing sounded better than being a teenager.

That was ten years ago now. Ava and I have grown apart. I'm still obsessed with turning sixteen. Actually, that's the reason we drifted apart. She said I was too focused on the future and I didn't live in the moment. I guess that's true, but I can't help it. There's something so exciting about being sweet 16!

It was now May 14th, the day before my birthday. My last day to be fifteen. It was the day I'd been waiting for for years.

Finally, I would be sixteen.
