In the woods, there live a thirteen-year-old girl with two little brothers that are sound asleep and she happy for once that they didn't stay up, so they wouldn't have to hear what's going on outside. You see the girl has a high dose of curiosity, sometimes she is grateful for it and other times she wishes she didn't have it, this would be one of those times. She was used to the yelling and the arguing between them, she would always laugh when she saw them argue, she knew that things would go back to normal after they argue, but this time, she knew it was different.
It was when they got back from Eagle Pass, they were visiting her father's cousin, it was late at night her brothers were asleep and she was starting to drift off too until she heard two voices that she knew all too well. When she looked at her window she saw both her parents, her mom was on the porch yelling with her hands in the air while her father was standing outside with his arms cross across his chest just looking at her. Even though she was in her room she could hear them and she could tell that her mom was crying, by the way, her voice cracked, she could tell that after this night things would not be the same anymore.
A half an hour later, she heard the front door open then closed the her father telling her mother something, a door opening then a rustle of covers, door closing, then walking and then finally some little snoring that show her that her father had fallen asleep. When she was sure that her parents were asleep she let out the sob that she was holding, she let out all the emotions that she had to bottle up all those years. She knew that something was wrong on the way home; she knew that they were at each other throats; she never thought it would get to the point where they finally break.
She stood up that night crying and thinking of different scenarios of how her life going be, how her brothers are going to react to this. Her brothers, she forgot that they are too young and won't understand what's going on. When she finally got to sleep it was as around five in the morning and she got little to no sleep that day, she remembers that her parents didn't know she heard them, so she acted as if nothing happen. Whenever her parents asked if she was okay with it, she fakes a smile, and says, 'I'm fine,' but she knows if they look clearly in her eyes they could see the sadness in her eyes.
That's me, I'm the little thirteen-year-old girl and I was right, nothing since that day has been the same. I been hiding behind that smile and laugh so they won't have to worry about me; I been lying and saying that everything is alright when it's not. We love each other, everyone but my parents, it seems that their love for each other had faded away over the years.
