It's been a month, and Sky still hasn't woken up. The Doc was gettin worried about her. Dally had lost all his sanity. "When is she supposed to wake up, again?" Dally demanded from the Doc. "She was supposed to wake up two weeks ago." He replied. Darry was worrying himself sick, and Soda cried himself to sleep every night. It's not that Ponyboy didn't cry at all, it's just, they were talkin about taking her off life support. A few Socs had come to visit her. Rumours spread at school, that Bob Sheldon and his buddy, Randy put Sky Curtis into A Coma. Many came up and asked Pony how she was doing, but He always just walked away. Cherry Valance had apologized. Two-bit felt miserable, as if this was his fault. "This is all my fault," Two-bit said. "If I hadn't been late picking you guys up, those guys never woulda touched her." Johnny just sat there quietly. Holding her hand. The Doc came back in. "I'm so sorry," he said. "But Skylar's gone brain dead. She has a 10% chance of pulling through. It will take a lot of time, and patience." He paused.
"What are you saying?" Darry demanded.
"I'm saying that you should consider taking her off life support. Letting her go." The room was suddenly quiet. "What?" Darry spat. Sodapop started bawling his eyes out again. "I'm not giving up on my sister. Never." The Doc left the room. As he was going out the door, he said, "You should also consider the pain she's in. It's hard for her, too." Then left. Ponyboy could tell his words were getting to Darry. "How dare he!" Dally said. He was close to tears. No one had ever seen THE Dally Winston cry. "He has no right!" Steve put a comforting arm around Soda, and Soda cried in his best friends arms. He was going to loose his twin sister. The one who always understood him. Ponyboy sat there, and looked at everyone's tear-streaked faces. "Maybe he's right," Darry said so suddenly, that when Ponyboy looked at him, turning his head so fast, that he could hear his neck crack. "What?!" Soda yelled. "You're not taking my twin sister off life support!" Darry glared at him.
"Stop being so selfish," Dally said. "We need her to live."
"I'm not," said Darry. "Don't forget, she's in pain to. Probably worse than ours. Hers is physical." They all considered it. "We'll vote." Darry said. "How many may for taking her off?" Darry, Two-bit, Steve and Ponyboy all raised their hands. "How many for keeping her on?" Dally, Soda and Johnny all raised their hands.
"It's settled then." Darry left to go tell the Doctor their desiccant. Sodapop held Skylar's hand, and whispered everything he'd ever kept from her, praying that she would wake up, even though it was almost impossible. The Doc came back into the room with Darry. "Well?" He asked, almost excitedly. Sodapop was disgusted with him. "Have you decided?" Darry nodded glumly.
"We've decided to let her go." He said. The Doc nodded. He walked over to the life supporter. He carefully flicked off the buttons, and soon, the machine shut down. No one breathed. After when everyone had left, Johnny still sat there. Holding her hand, whispering to her, even though he knew she was already gone. "Hey, Sky." He'd whispered. "I miss you already. Still kinda hard to believe you're gone. You were only sixteen." Finally, he broke down, tears spilling down his cheeks, and making quiet gasping sounds. Johnny Cade loved Skylar Curtis. Only, no one ever saw it. No one saw Johnny Cade ever being brave enough to love. But, he was. They had been bestfriends. She had saved him, even though it meant getting hurt herself. He had loved her. He did love her.(How did my first 3rd P.O.V. Go?)
