  [Cat!Karma x Reader]

Ever since you were young, having a cat companion have been a dream of yours.

In your mind, you've always viewed cats as quiet and introverted animals. Unlike dogs, you don't need to constantly pamper them with attention, bring them to walks and play with them every single second. Cats seemed like animals who would handle themselves well and you could still play with them whenever you wanted to, isn't that nice?

So you should know what happened when you finally got a cat pet as your birthday present last year.

The cat has thick and glowing orange fur that is decorated with rusty deep red marbled tabby patterns. It wasn't very fat, neither was it very thin. Summing it up, it was basically your perfect little cat.

Head over heels, you approached the cat as slowly as you can, your eyes twinkling in joy. The cat observed you on its fours, but soon enough, it relaxed and laid down on the cardboard box your parents got. Seeing this as your cue, you grinned gleefully and pull out your hand, giving the cat a scratch on its neck. The cat looked a little surprise at your touch but it seemed to enjoy it a lot and rubbed its head against your finger. Your heart swelled in instant happiness and your face flushed in pure delight.

"Aw~ so cute...!"

Despite so, your older brother doesn't look very fond of your new friend. Face twisted in irritation, he walked over to the both of you.

"What's so cute about this ball of fur?" He rudely cut in and knelt down, nearly pushing you over. You glared at him and protested.

"What, you have a problem?"

Your brother ignored and proceeded to poke the cat, in attempt to annoy it. You exclaimed in unhappiness and shouted at him to stop but to no avail. Without any warning, the cat suddenly raised its head and bit down on the finger that was disturbing it. At that instance, your brother screeched in pain, jumping away as fast as possible. Watching the scene in front of you unfold, you burst into a huge fit of laughter.

"Serve you right, idiot!" You roared with more laughter as your brother shot you an agitated and fumed look, clearly unhappy that your new friend just bit him. Glancing back at his injured finger, there was blood oozing out as he rushed to clean it up immediately. You wiped your tears away after your laughter ceased as you took a glimpse of your cat, which looked like it was snickering too. You studied him a few more times before an idea popped into your head.

"Say, why don't I name you, 'Karma'?"

Your parents who just entered the room overheard your words and pondered. You noticed their confused expression before explaining.

"When I treat it finely, it treats me well too." You flipped your hair proudly, "while SOME CERTAIN bad people who doesn't treat it nicely gets what they deserve."

You were certain you heard the first aid kit fell in the room next door. Just then, your parents gave each other another glance before their lips stretched into a smile.

"Sounds like a good name to us."

"Mom, Dad!" Your brother screamed from afar as you laughed again.

It was all well and good until that night after you showered, you entered your bedroom to only find your homework sprawled everywhere on the floor. In between the mess, there sat your cat in the middle of room, back facing you. You gasped in shock, before you could say another word, a voice interrupted.

"Eh? This question is so easy, how can you get it wrong?"

Your body froze as you stared right at the source of the voice. Questions and fear clouded your mind as you attempted to process that male-like voice, there's no way this is happening, right? There is no possible way! You must be hallucinating...I mean, after all,

Why would a cat be speaking?

You tried to convince yourself by giving another laughter, you must be overly excited, geez. How old are you? Just as that thought crossed your mind, your cat suddenly turned around, its eyes squinting and its mouth tugged upwards into what felt like a grin. When the next moment came, you felt that your world had stopped turning.

"Surprise? Master-chan. It's me, Karma." The cat's mouth moved as it spoke out those word.

Your eyes widened in shock before you felt fear filling you up in an instance.

"AHHHHHHH!"

--

Obviously, that was from last year. After your incredibly ear-piercing scream, your family came to your rescue and eventually found out about Karma. None of you knew why he was able to talk, and decided to keep it as a secret. I mean who knows what would happen if the news of some cat knowing how to talk spread around the world. You would probably lose Karma in less than half a day and that's the last thing you want after your dream has finally been accomplished. Now, most people may get the impression that having a talking cat makes an even better companion because the both of you can understand each other, but you thought so too. Unfortunately, you were completely wrong.

Your cat. Your goddamn cat.

His personality was straight-up terrible. He would play pranks on people, be it humans or cats, even you! He teases you about every little thing, and what's worst? He's a freaking genius. Most of your work was done with the help of him, even if you don't want to admit it. Just...how on earth can a creature like him become so smart? Overall, it's tough hanging out with him. You feel like a devil is constantly following you, 24/7.

In spite so, there was moment that he could be very dearing. You remembered when you failed the test you studied so hard for, you came home and locked yourself in your bedroom, too devastated to communicate with anyone. Sure, your cat buddy tried to tease you again at first, but once those tears rolled down your cheeks, he quietly shut up like a clam. It wasn't like him to comfort anyone, but the way he quietly curled up beside you , you could tell he was putting in effort, and it certainly helped you a lot. No matter how many times he made you angry, you still treasure him-

"Oo, frilly ones? I didn't think you would buy those underwears."

Your cat mocking voice suddenly sounded in your ears, interrupting your thoughts. An irk mark instantly appeared as you clenched your uniform that was in your hand tightly. Right now, you were trying to get dressed for school, and obviously still in your undergarments because Karma hasn't stop making fun of you.

"What's the occassion, master-chan? Wearing such-"

"Oh shush." Heat rose in your cheeks immediately, "It's not that special."

"Orya? Jackpot? C'mon, spill the beans." He jumped onto your shoulder, making you jolted. His face inched closer to yours as you backed away.

"If I say it, you're just going to make fun of me again."

"When have I not made fun of you?"

"Exactly. Makes me not want to tell you."

"Aw, cannot?" Even though he was a cat, he still nailed the puppy eyes pretty nicely. You could only respond with a defeated sigh.

"Fine. The usual, okay?"

"Yeah yeah, I won't ever tell anyone else, even if I wanted to."

"You're such a shithead."

"Thanks~"

"I'm...." Your words fell short, "I'm confessing today."

The silence was a little longer than you expected, but he still replied.

"That blonde playboy?"

"!" You jumped, "H-he might be one but...I trust him. I'm sure he can be serious if he try."

You shot a sheepish smile at your furry friend, who doesn't look very pleased.

"Guys like him are sure to dump you in seconds."

"You're still on about that? Give him a chance, he's a nice person!"

Karma jumped off your shoulder without saying anything and landed on top of your bed. Not a single word spoken, he crawled under your comfy blanket and curled into a ball, just like any cat would do. You frowned at the sight, knowing well what the signs he was showing meant. He was sulking, which only happens whenever you talk about your crush, how unlike him.

After you put on your school jacket, you walked back to that eye catching circular bulge forming from the blanket and knelt down beside it. You huffed and lifted up the blanket a little to take a peek at him.

"I'll come back soon."

Hearing the bedroom door open, he thought you had left when you suddenly spoke again.

"No matter what, I still love you, kay?"

With that, the door slammed shut as the cat finally crawled out of his hiding place, face redder than his own fur.

--

The rain was pouring strong, your vision was blurred and uncleared. Using this as an excuse, you tried to tell yourself it wasn't true. The scene in front of you, surely was the rain's doing, wasn't it?

There was the boy you wanted to be devoted to, with another lady. No matter how many times you told yourself you're just seeing things, your brain knew it was all untrue. He was leaning into her as you felt your heart shattered into million pieces. Your knees turned jelly in seconds as you felt the strength in your hand being drained away, causing you to drop the polka dots umbrella. The rain instantly rushed into your space and drenched you to head to toes, while the couple still remained unaware of your presence. The sourness rose in the back of your throat as the liquid started to well up in your eyes but was all washed away by the dirty water falling from the sky.

You couldn't stand watching the whole thing unfold before you as you took a step back, stepping right into a pool of mud water that splashed at the contact. With a swift spin, your legs took you to somewhere else as your eyes shut close tightly, leaving your umbrella on the floor. You shouted as you ran, and ran, and ran. You were too scared to see.

He said....

He said he was going to think about it.

It was clearly not the truth, but it certainly wasn't a lie either. You couldn't blame him, you couldn't blame anybody. What a cruel fate, that thought cycled around again and again as your legs continued to sprint further away, till it brought you to the nearby park. The sky had turned as dark as eclipse, the street lamp meekly emitting a glow as you tripped over your feet, falling over to the ground and right into the dirty mud. The pain struck you in seconds, but you were too numb to even feel anything at this point. You tried to push yourself up with your elbow, only to no avail when you broke into more tears.

You wailed loudly for seconds, minutes or maybe hours. You just couldn't hold back the sorrow that clogged your heart, you didn't care that you were soaked wet, you didn't care that your knees were bruised and bleeding, you didn't care you were covered in dirt. You couldn't care even if you wanted to. Time kept flowing like your tears, and you didn't know how to control it. You wanted to give up everything on the spot, you wanted to stop existing.

Till he finally came by.

Karma stood on the fence of the park as he stared at your pathetic figure, crying like an idiot in the drizzling rain. He instantly registered the scene and was stunned. You didn't come home for so long, so he decided to come out and look for you. Now he's faced with the worst sight he's ever seen of you, and it was all because of some guy who doesn't cherish you. He was utterly heartbroken just looking at you like that.

Your usual smile, your embarrassed face, your determined look, all vanished into thin air and replaced by expressions of anguish and misery.

Without hesitation, he leaped off the fence and landed perfectly on his fours as he sprinted towards you. Through your blurry vision, you spotted the familiar red creature as you bit down on your lips, trying to hold back the cries in front of him. When he halted in front of you, you could see frustration, melancholy and fury swirling in his cat irises. You weakly pushed yourself upright, sitting on the murky soil. You knew he was going to make fun again and you attempted not to cry again.

However, when he suddenly hopped into your arm, you were taken aback. He snuggled into your chest without warning as a warm feeling started occupying the emptiness of your shattered heart. You held him closer and tighter as another round of tears welled up in your eyes again, causing you to sob and whimper. His head popped up from your arm as he leaned in to your cheeks and licked the liquid off your cheeks.

"Stupid, that crying face doesn't suit you at all."

For a moment, you swore you saw a figure, his face, those golden irises, long and bright red hair. Mischievous eyes that doesn't shine, a smug grin that fit his personality just right. The second you blink, the image evaporated like bubbles, disappearing in an instance. When you snapped back to reality, you came face to face with the Karma you knew. Somehow, the urge to cry finally died down as you reached for the back his head and gave him a good scratch.

"(F/N)?" He purred a little.

"Thank you, Karma. Thank you so much." You rested your forehead against his small one. Another long silence lingered, but to be honest, you no longer needed his reply. You just needed his presence, his words and just him. He was your companion, and he would always be here. Just like what you've dreamt of. Your lips tugged upward in happiness as you squeezed him a little tighter in gratitude.

'If only I could be the one you would be devoted to..."

The voice ranged in the back of his head as he let out a meow.
